Music: Mention the Davenport Community Schools, and our music program is one of the outstanding assets that comes to the minds of many. Davenport Schools have a reputation for excellent bands, orchestras, and choirs as well as general music dating back to 1895. Participation in music provides our young adults with life skills that enable them to be more comfortable with themselves as well as with others.
The vocal and instrumental music talents of our students can be enjoyed in a number of venues each school year – from the highly attended Band Spectacular featuring all of our secondary schools in the fall to the Great River and Big Dance Show Choir Festivals hosted by our high schools in the spring. The swirl of melody and movement at these events is first-rate. In fact, at the high school level, the performances often are compared to those of professionals.
Opportunities to appreciate and study music begin early in our schools. Vocal music is taught at the elementary, intermediate, and high school levels. Students also may begin studying a musical instrument of their choice as early as fourth grade in elementary school through weekly lessons with a teacher. Students have the opportunity to select from or audition for an array of elective music courses when they reach high school.
This commitment to musical pedagogy is evidenced each year when a large group of Davenport students participates in the Iowa All-State Band, Orchestra, and Choir. Our students also consistently earn top ratings in regional music competitions, year after year.
Vocal and instrumental groups from Central, North, and West High Schools frequently are invited to participate in the stages of prestigious national places and events. Many times, they also have placed among the top winners at competitive events on this level.
