Attendance Requirements
The State of Iowa also recognizes the importance of regular attendance and has mandated new Chronic Absenteeism policies to address this issue per Senate File 2435. Under the new guidelines, schools will monitor and address absenteeism more rigorously to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed. The state’s commitment to enforcing these policies underscores the vital role that consistent school attendance plays in every student’s educational journey.

With the passing of Senate File 2435 and the changes to Iowa Code Chapter 299 - Compulsory Education, we want to provide you with the current requirements. Regular school attendance is crucial for student success. Students who attend school consistently are more likely to achieve at higher levels than those who do not. Missing school not only causes children to fall behind in fundamental reading and math skills but also prevents them from developing the good attendance habits essential for success in college and careers.
Chronic absence—defined as missing 10% or more of school days—is an early warning sign that a student may struggle academically. Chronic absenteeism can lead to difficulties in reading by the end of third grade, academic challenges in middle school, and an increased risk of dropping out of high school.
Attendance is the foundation for learning and achievement.
