Foundation Awards Davenport West’s Halle Hansen with the 2026 Kathryn Bell Tate Scholarship

A group of people, including a mix of men and women, are standing together and holding a large check in front of a backdrop with the text "Davenport West High School".

In a surprise announcement, Davenport West High School senior Halle Hansen was awarded the 2026 Kathryn Bell Tate Scholarship. This $24,000 scholarship is awarded annually to one Davenport senior who is a child of a district employee through the Davenport Schools Foundation and is distributed over a four-year period. The scholarship can be used at any accredited college or university.

Hansen plans to attend the University of Iowa in the fall, where she intends to study psychology and law. Her long-term goal is to pursue a career in law, combining her passion for learning with a desire to advocate for and empower others.

“Each year, we’re inspired by the dedication and potential shown by Davenport students,” said Steve Ahrens, Executive Director of the Davenport Schools Foundation. “The Tate Scholarship recognizes not only academic achievement, but also leadership, perseverance, and a commitment to making a difference. We are proud to support Halle’s next chapter and look forward to seeing the impact she will make in the future.”

Hansen has excelled academically at West, earning a 4.0 GPA and an ACT score of 28 while completing a full course load that includes Advanced Placement and college-level courses.

A dedicated student leader, Hansen has been active in several extracurricular activities during her time at West. She currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Yearbook, leading a staff of students in designing and producing a publication that captures the stories and experiences of the school year. She is also a member of the Leadership Experience Opportunity (LEO) Club, where students volunteer in the school and throughout the community. In athletics, Hansen has been a four-year member of the Varsity Softball team and serves as Co-Captain during her senior season.

Outside of school, Hansen has demonstrated a strong commitment to service through her involvement in 4-H. She has participated for eight years and currently serves as President of the Blue Grass Sunshine Workers club, after previously holding roles as treasurer and secretary. Through the organization, she has helped lead community projects including library cleanups, creating fidget boards for dementia patients, and making pet beds for the Humane Society.

Hansen also works as a Student Leader through AmeriCorps, helping fellow students explore postsecondary options and prepare for college after graduation.

“My thing is learning,” Hansen said. “Learning only takes hard work; all you need is ambition and curiosity.” She credits her achievements to persistence and a strong work ethic, adding that she hopes to continue learning while helping others find their voice and seize opportunities in the future.

The scholarship, awarded annually by the Davenport Schools Foundation, was established in honor of Kathryn Bell Tate to help children of employees of Davenport Community School District finance their undergraduate education. Tate was a longtime teacher at McKinley Elementary School. Each year, one Davenport student is selected to receive the scholarship.

Hansen is the daughter of Stephanie Hansen, a Spanish teacher at Davenport West High School since 2003, and Noel Hansen, a technology innovator serving Blue Grass, Hayes, and Walcott schools since 2003.
