Davenport West High School Celebrates New Athletic Facilities with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
Davenport West High School recently unveiled its newly athletic facility addition with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the completion of a $9.2 million construction and renovation project. The extensive upgrades, which wrapped up over the summer, include a new auxiliary gymnasium, renovated competition gymnasium, a new, modern weight room and wrestling room, and additional practice spaces for basketball and volleyball.
Davenport West had previously operated with a single gym and basement-level athletic spaces. With the new improvements, students now have access to multiple athletic rooms on the ground floor, creating an environment designed for both convenience and enhanced performance.
Superintendent T.J. Schneckloth emphasized the importance of the project, stating, "Today is not just about cutting a ribbon or celebrating a building; it’s about celebrating opportunity. This new athletic facility is an investment in our students' potential – both on and off the field. It’s an investment in their growth as athletes, leaders, and individuals who will shape the future of our community.”
West High School Athletic Director Michelle Lillis expressed her excitement about the upgrades, particularly the new athletic spaces. "It’s been a long wait, but now our students finally have what they need," she said. "This will make a huge difference in their experience."
The West High School athletic facility addition is the first project to be completed under DCSD’s long range facilities plan and reflects the district’s commitment to creating world-class academic and athletic spaces for students, ensuring that Davenport West students continues to be a place where students can thrive both in the classroom and on the court.
