Eighth Grade Participation in High School Athletics
Pursuant to House File 2591 (2026), Iowa school districts are authorized to permit eligible eighth-grade students to participate in high school interscholastic athletics. In accordance with this legislation, the Davenport Community School District has adopted guidance allowing eligible eighth-grade students to try out for and participate on athletic teams at Central, North, and West High Schools in sports not currently offered at the middle school level and swimming and cross country, beginning with the 2026–2027 school year.
The sports for which eligible eighth-grade students may participate in the high school selection process include:
- Girls / Boys Tennis
- Boys / Girls Cross Country
- Boys / Girls Swimming
- Girls / Boys Golf
- Girls / Boys Soccer
- Girls / Boys Bowling
Participation is contingent upon compliance with all applicable eligibility requirements, team selection procedures, and the provisions. Students must satisfy established high school academic, behavioral, attendance, and athletic eligibility standards for any subsequent high school sports. Eligible eighth-grade students will be evaluated and selected using the same criteria and procedures applied to all high school student-athletes.
This opportunity expands access to interscholastic athletic programs not currently available at the middle school level while preserving the integrity, expectations, and competitive standards of Davenport Community School District athletics. We will also offer cross country and swimming for 8th grade participants. We will be evaluating after each season to improve and enhance athletic opportunities for all students.
Key Points For Families
- Students that participate in one of the high school sports may also compete in a different sport at the middle high sport level.
- Parent/guardian transportation required — Families are responsible for transportation to all high school practices and competitions.
- No guarantees — Making a team or receiving playing time is not guaranteed; roster and playing time decisions rest with the coaching staff. Those expectations will be communicated prior to the start of tryouts.
- All necessary paperwork is required - All participants must follow the district Good Conduct Policy and have a current pre-participation physical on file. Link is below.
- Registration process — High School and Middle School registration opens July 1 contact the school of your choice for details regarding registering. They will provide information about team expectations and tryout details. Parent / student policy sheet
- Students wishing to participate in athletics at a school outside of their designated high school attendance boundary must complete and submit a Transfer Option Form to the high school athletic director within 3 days after making the high school team. The Athletic Director will submit the Transfer Option documentation to the district office. Upon approval and participation, the selected school will become the student's designated home school for athletic eligibility purposes. Any subsequent enrollment or participation at a different school will be considered a transfer and will be subject to all applicable athletic association and district transfer policies, including any eligibility requirements, restrictions, or consequences associated with the transfer.- Transfer option application
