Ms. Mesick's Sixth Grade Center Class
Will Exhibit at the Figge
Details and Photos below...

A collaborative quilt created by a JB Young 6th grade class and area quilters will be a part of the Companion Exhibition, Quilt Stories: A Community Quilt Project, February 1st through the 11th at the Figge Art Museum.  First, the class made a study trip to view the current exhibit, Accidentally On Purpose: Improvisation in African-American Textiles and African-American Quilts.  Area quilters Sue Grove and Sylvia Banes paired with Young students.  They assisted in the piecing of the quilt by threading needles and demonstrating techniques in piecing fabric.  When each student had completed his or her piece, together the class made decisions on the composition of the quilt.   Sue and Sylvia then sewed each piece together  by connecting pieces with colorful fabric strips.  Area quilter Barb Freese then decoratively machine quilted the entire quilt.  Today, our volunteer friends brought the completed quilt for the class to sign.  All three area networks were present as we signed the quilt and shared our thoughts.
JB Young students have partnered with the Figge Art Museum this year and have been part of a working theme, A Sense of Place.  With help from our quilting friends, the choice to explore our own personal creativity—the magic of needle, thread and fabric—the 6th grade class took an adventure into the world of fiber arts.  We extend a heartfelt thank you to the Figge Art Museum; volunteer quilters Sue Grove, Sylvia Banes, and Barb Freese; and the students who took part in this community effort.  When people view our  quilt in the Companion Exhibition, it will be evident that JB Young has a sense of place in our creative community.                                                                  —Ms. Mesick, Art Teacher
