Award-winning Illustrator Demonstrates his Skills

We were honored to have a visit from the award-winning illustrator and author David Biedrzycki. (Beh-drick-key) His art work can be seen in many books. He has done the illustrations for seven of Jerry Pallotta’s books. You may have some of his art work in your house, as he has designed the art work you see on the packages for Mott’s Apple Juice,  Life Savers candies, and various other products. He explained that he can make from $6-$9000 by making one drawing that is used by a company.

His interest in nature, and especially bugs, inspired him to write and illustrate Ace Lacewing Bug Detective, a cleverly written and illustrated book drawing on the antics of old detective stories, with bugs as the characters. He is currently working on the sequel.

Mr. Biedrzycki’s presentation included a step-by-step demonstration of how he creates his art using a computer and a graphic tablet. His power point/video showed the students his studio and how he uses animals found in museums as his models. He also showed the first comic book he made when he was in second grade. He explained that when he became a better reader, his comic books became better.

Mr. Biedrzycki has traveled all over the world. This was his first time visiting Iowa. He enjoyed having lunch with a group of our students and sharing his art experiences. His web site is <www.davidbiedrzycki.com>.

Thank you to Mrs. Corbin and Ms. Mesick for coordinating the visit.
