Student Work from Mrs. Searle's Language Arts 7 & 8 Classes
1995-96
All work started with a specific assignment.
Students began the writing process--creating a web, a cluster, a fish bone
skeleton, an outline, or a Venn diagram. Students then created a draft or
two. Revision, editing, and polishing followed.
The papers you see published here represent the students' original work.
Enjoy. If you'd like to E-mail one of the students, use this address: searlek@mail.davenport.k12.ia.us
and/or gazredtoyota@hotmail.com and address the comments to the student
whose name appears at the top of the work.
Enjoy!
Being homeless isn't easy. Waking
up to rats and the nauseating smell emanating from my body reminds me that
I'm homeless. There are no birds chirping in the trees-just the scurry of
rats in litter. I remember when I had a warm, cozy kitchen with a smell
of frying bacon. I remember the safe, secure feeling I got with a roof over
my head. Now I rummage through dirty, greasy, smelly dumpsters hoping for
something to eat. I beg people for money to buy decent food or warm clothes.
I walk down the crowded sidewalks looking for a place to sleep. Now I'll
even take a sewer grate or a fire escape. I look for jobs, but the answer
is always the same: we are looking for someone with more experience. I'll
still try to get a job and rent an apartment and get on with my life, but
until then, all I'll be is another wounded person to step over or look past.
Don't you just hate them
They're always around
They get the best stuff
They're always bullying you
They get the biggest room
They tie you to a pole
When you tell your mom about it
All she says is "Stop it I've got a headache"
For years and years
It goes on and on
Then one day they are gone
And you are left behind
You feel like a part of you is gone
Like you're not a whole anymore
They come home for a while
but you never see them
They're with their friends
And you're a nobody now
Enjoy the years and memories with them
Because when they're gone, they're gone
His sparkling hazel eyes
Gleamed under brownish-black fringe
We always got into trouble
He dared me on and on
Then he tattled
An impish gleam
Like a lighthouse beam
He's over protective
whenever I have a boyfriend
When I'm sick or sad
He'll do anything to make me laugh
Though we've had our spats and arguments
He's always there for me
Through thick and thin
He's always there

My older sibling, my friend
Maybe older siblings
Aren't so bad after all

Just think of it, a shoe.
It keeps your foot warm.
And keeps your feet from getting hurt,
from the hard, rough, rocky, warm, and cold ground.
The sight of a shoe is great,
I would prefer a NIKE shoe.
Every one is a shoe in their own way.
Not too often do you see two people with the same shoe.
If you're a dirty person, your shoe is dirty.
If you're a clean person, your shoe is clean.
If you're a small person you'd wear a size 3 or so.
If you're a big person you'd wear a size 20 or so.
The only down-side is after an extreme work-out,
It creates a nasty odor.
And you get to tie two laces together,
To make them tight.
They also come in pairs,
To make them a team to prevent your feet from pain.
