What’s New This Year? Teams Explore a New Grading Policy You may notice some of your teachers or teams are using
a new grading policy this year. This
new grading system employs the letter grade of “I” or, incomplete, to
represent a students work has not met satisfactory levels of performance.
Students whose teachers use this system can receive grades of A,B,C,
or I. Holding all students to
the expectation that work must be completed to a “C” standard or above
reinforces high quality work. Should
your students receive an “I” on their mid-term or report card, it
means they are not currently passing the class.
A passing grade will be recorded when all work is completed to
satisfactory expectations. |
New Anti-Bullying Curriculum in Place This year, the Davenport Community School District is
addressing harassment and bullying through the adoption of the Second Step
Anti-Bullying Curriculum. All
students will receive instruction through their PE classes and support
group activities will be offered. Parking Lot Changes Please observe the traffic flow arrows painted on the
parking lot this past summer. If
all follow the arrows and designated drop-off and pick-up areas, traffic
will flow smoothly this year. |

Office Corner:
This is a reminder that service fees are now due. Service fees are $27 each semester ($54 per year). For those of you that have reduced fees, the cost is $17.40 per semester. In order to waive fees, you must have a signed waiver on file every year. If you have any questions regarding fees, please call and ask for Vivian.
Also various fines from all previous years need to be taken care of at this time. This will include library fines, gym locks, textbook damage or loss, delinquent service fees and fundraiser balances. These fees will show on your fee receipt as a "previous balance due" or "delinquent service fees" and include the year.
All students absent from school are required to have a parent/guardian call our office. You will be asked for their name, grade, symptoms or reason for absence and which parent is calling. Please read your child’s handbook located in the front of the planner to see the definition of an excused absence. You may address any questions regarding absences to Judy.
Lost & Found: Student’s will be called to the office to pick up identified items, after attempting to get students to do this twice, items will be displayed on a table next to the main office for one week. Items will be donated to Goodwill on Tuesdays. Please take only items that belong to you.
It is imperative that we have correct address and telephone numbers for each student at all times. The school district will be mailing information to parents at various times of the year and must have correct mailing addresses listed in their system. We are only as accurate as the information we receive from parents.
Secretary Office hours are 7:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and phone calls will be answered during these times. Please be aware that we do not have voice mail or an answering machine so there will not be anyone available to take messages after 4:30p.m.

Students are reminded to make arrangements ahead of time for after school rides or plans. The office telephone may be used for emergencies only. Students should be leaving the building after school unless they have made arrangements to stay with a staff member or program.

Meet
the Team Hello. We are the Seven Grade Golden Spartans Teachers. We meet every day between the times of 9:30 and 10. Our duties during this time are to discuss student issues, create lesson plans, and communicate with parents. If you should ever have a question or would like to meet with us, please call the school (391-6350) to set up an appointment during this time. Also, feel free to call us during the time listed above and we will gladly give you grade and progress updates. We look forward to having a great school year.
Mr. McMahon, Mrs. Swaggard, Mr. DeBaene Ms. Ramirez, Mrs. Mickelson, and Mrs. McGrath
This October, our team will have a different look. We will be conducting student-led conferences in room 503 (Mr. DeBaene). Student-led conferences will help students build self-esteem, pride, and responsibility through the selection, sharing, and preparation of work at conference time. Student-led conferences promote student accountability: Students share with parents why and how they did or did not meet teachers’ academic expectations, and students share their own behavior records. After review, students and parents can make future academic and behavior goals. The student portfolio provides a visual and measurable picture of the student’s growth. Student led conferences have also been shown to increase parental involvement. Conferences will be October 12th and October 13th. Your student will bring home a letter asking you to pick your choices of times. Whether you can come or not, please return the letter with your signature. We look forward to this new process in conferencing.

Wood Music Staff
2005-2006

Mrs. Kendell, Mrs. Reiter, Mr. Tadlock, Ms. McMillen, Mr. Henry

Welcome back to students and parents
! We are ready to begin a great year. Part of my summer was spent with 40 middle school students, including three students from Wood, on a twenty day educational tour of the United Kingdom. What fun!I am looking forward to providing services to your students and supporting the fine staff at Wood. This is my 7th year as the Wood TAG Facilitator. Programs are starting immediately for all Tag students at Wood.
6th grade TAG Foundation for Success is a first quarter opportunity which will allow the students to acquire or refine the necessary skills to:
demonstrate appropriate independence in setting goals, plan and organize their work, identify their own strengths, communicate effectively with peers and staff and gain an understanding of diversity among all learners.
We are meeting twice a week during the first quarter. I also hope to begin some talk with them regarding career choices.
7th and 8th grade TAG students jumped right into Mock Trial. We are given a case by the Iowa State Bar Association to study and ‘act out’ using questioning and logic skills we have worked on before in other TAG activities. On the first Saturday in November, the students will compete at the Scott County Courthouse with other middle school TAG kids in the region. The case may be accessed at iowabar.org, selecting Jr. High Mock Trial from the menu.
My continuing focus to support our classroom teachers began the first day with plans for collaboration on all grade levels. I am now on an 8th grade team this year as well. I also have an Advisory Period first thing in the morning.
If you have any questions of concerns about TAG at Wood, please call me at; 391-6350, or just email me at: davisma@davenportschools.org. I would love to hear from you. Mrs. Marci Davis/TAG Facilitator

The Library belongs to everyone who visits it.
The Library is a quiet place in the school.
Students should return Library chairs to their proper places before leaving.
All patrons should be able to come to the Library and use the services provided.

Aluminum Can Tabs: We collect aluminum can tabs of all shapes, colors and sizes. These go directly to the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City. Tabs are turned in for cash to be used to supplement lodging for parents having children in the hospitals. The tabs are a GREAT way for our students to support the Community of the state of Iowa.
Campbell’s Soup Label: Again this year we are collecting Campbell’s Soup Labels. A more detailed list of the exact product labels will come out later. If you are used to collecting them, for instance Franco-American, please send those also.

eLockers: Again this school year, all students in the Davenport Middle and High Schools will be given a computer user name and password. Students in grades 7th and 8th grades received their computer user name and password last year, while 6th graders will receive them from the Media Specialist. A sticker with a personal password will be given to each student. This will enable students to logon to any school computer and save their work in a personal folder. A second copy of the student password will result in a $.25 fee.
General Mills Box Tops for Education: We collect General Mills Box Tops for Education. These Box Tops are turned in and the money is used for the laminating at Wood. In the past 5 years, the collection of Box Tops has enabled us to not only purchase a laminator, but sustain all the laminating film too. What a great way to help Wood Intermediate School.
Library Books and Magazines: The library is busy with students and classes reading, studying, and checking out books. The Library Holdings are over 10,000 books, with an additional 20 magazines and two newspapers.
Magazines: The Library is always looking for old magazines (appropriate for our ages 5 – 13) for our students to use for projects. These magazines would be used to cut out photos, etc. Bring some to your school Library.
Month of the Adolescent: During the month of October, we celebrate the Month of the Adolescent. Special books will be displayed and students are encouraged to visit the LMC.
New Library Books: The Library new books for the student collection are en route to our school. We will save three days for the teachers to bring their classes to the Library to see all the new books before any are checked out.
