STRIVING FOR SUCCESS

We are Striving for Success at Wood Intermediate!!  To accomplish this,we are examining student test data (ITBS and Degree of Reading Power  scores), academic grades, and Instructional Focus results.  Instructional Focus activities are mini-ITBS-like assessments given in Advisory Period and in math classes.  With all this information, we are creating “success plans” for students.  We hope this will help with consistent monitoring of all students and not allow any students to “fall through the cracks.”

Congratulations  to Mrs. Sheri Schultz on her appointment as Principal at Wahington Elementary School!  In Mrs. Schultz’s absence, we have named Mrs. Jenni Weipert as Interim Associate Principal for the balance of this school year.  Mrs. Weipert taught seventh grade global studies here at Wood.

Get involved in the fall and winter activities. Join the Booster Club!! It meets every second Tuesday of the month. See Ms. Dunn about joining the Drama Club!. Join the basketball or wrestling team. 8th Grade Nebulas

Ms. “Wacky Professor” Gersdorf - Science

Thank you ever so much for your get-well-soon cards.  I really don’t remember how it happened, but I am only thankful that I was alone when the explosion occurred, and also that the chemical spill was limited to the personal lab in my apartment.  Don’t worry a thing about the toes on my right foot, the doctors assure me that this will now balance me out since the last explosion ripped off three of my toes on my left foot.  Also, the beaker shrapnel is healing very nicely too.

In 8th grade Science, we just completed the exciting unit of MATTER.  Volume, Mass and Density….….OH MY!

Next week, we will begin a fun filled unit about atoms.  One of the student’s major projects will be to make their own atom so it would be a good idea to start collecting wires, Styrofoam, and anything else that you think would make it look attractive.  They will be receiving more information on this MATTER later.  I have recently been receiving many phone calls from you concerned parents about my past history of blowing things up accidentally.  It is my belief that I have truly learned from my mistakes, so I truly feel that you should relax because your child is NOW safe with me in my classroom.

Other than that, G-Unit is my name, Science is my game, and if you have questions but don’t call me it will be a shame!

Mr. “Sub-Total” Proctor- Mathematics

Algebra classes will be working with proportions and graphing.  Holly Graap, Cassie Brownell, Samantha Gerken, and Dustin Staver had the highest score on our last test.  In Algebraic Thinking we are working on square roots and the different properties of math.  We soon will be soon be starting equation solving.  Last but not least, the high scores on the last test were Matt Seidel, Chris McCracken, Kayleigh Orcutt, Amber Brackeeen, and Ashley Newton.  Remember, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me at 4 – 1, 5 + 4, 7 – 6, 8 – 2, 2 + 1, 3 + 2, 9 – 9.

Mr. “Pulitzer Prize” Butikofer- English

The students went BANANAS                                                              When Red Ribbon Week arrived,
When they heard about the guy                                                              We all said “No to drugs
Who told me of the architects                                                                 Because they are so dangerous
Who came down from the sky.                                                               (They’re deadlier than thugs.)

It all began four years ago...                                                                    We went to Aussie “Prep” School.
(A flashback has occurred.)                                                                   It’s called Down Under High…(D.U.H.)
I had a conversation                                                                              With tutu-wearing cheer squads,
Which was totally absurd.                                                                     And afro-wearing guys.

I had internal conflict;                                                                          Charley had a real friend…
I knew not what to do.                                                                           Algernon by name.
So I just changed the topic                                                                      He could talk to his voices,
To Michigan and Dew.                                                                           (But it would not be the same.)

NOTE to the reader:  These verses are intended to provoke conversations between readers and students about class content. (Without such explanation, they may be virtually incomprehensible.)

Samuel Adams-Humphries- American Studies

Hello my fellow Americans!  I am writing you this newsletter to inform you of the latest atrocities of those crazy Lobster backs and also our latest endeavors.  Man, they may not be able to fight in the brightest way, but they sure do look spiffy in those bright red uniforms.  My friends Benedict Arnold, George Washington and myself were at the local pub having a root beer, chowder, and some tasty fish and chips.  All of a sudden, they stormed into the pub while we were eating.  Being the stud that I am, I single handedly proceeded to pound the red out of their uniforms.  Meanwhile, George W., and Benedict hightailed it out of there through the back door.  I soon followed.  We all met up again at Molly Pilcher’s(yes this is the way I wanted to spell it) house.  I am curious however about how the Brits knew our exact location.  I definitely know that I can trust Benedict Arnold because he would never betray anyone.  However, George Washington has been acting overtly suspicious, and now I am not so sure he can be trusted.  Please keep your eyes open!

While we are in Boston, I think I will stock up on tea.  It seems that it is currently washing up on shore.  I wonder how this happened?  I know nothing and that is the story I am sticking to!  I am also hoping to do a wee bit of lobster fishing.  Please send me suggestions as to what I should put on my hook, because after all these years I have yet to actually catch one.  Oh well, must be just some plain bad luck. (Please continue to the next page for the remainder of this article)

The British captured three of my fellow Patriots, Private Apostolopoulos, Corporal Kindhart and Sergeant-Major Blackwell.  They got captured while wandering the countryside looking for some “Bean-O” for Captain Schoeve.  It seems that Captain Schoeve, who is in charge of our artillery batteries, has been having some artillery problems of his own.  Oh well, it sure was nice of them to go above and beyond the call of duty, but now they will be locked up for the remainder of the war.  Well, I really must be going.  Remember, there are two main reasons that you should not worry about the final outcome: 1. Generals like Benedict Arnold  2. I would never do anything irrational.

                                                                                                                         Rationally yours,

Samuel Adams-Humphries

Colony Project Pictures-  Below are some of the student examples of the model portion of the Colony Project.  This project had the students creating their own colonies.  They needed a front cover page, description page, jobs/people page, supplies page, government page, and finally a map or model the colony.  I was very impressed by the creativity of all of my students.  Some even created presentations using Power-Point.

CLASSROOM NEWS

ALGEBRAIC THINKING

The Algebraic Thinking classes are going well. The students are doing well with most of the lessons. We are on the fraction unit now, and each student has made a "Fraction Kit" to give them some extra help. Ask them about it if you haven't seen it. They will be taking the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test on November 24 & 25. Wish them GOOD LUCK. Thanks for ALL of your SUPPORT.

Mrs. Swaggard

GLOBAL STUDIES

My name is Brian McDermott and I am a student teacher from the University of Northern Iowa. I will be working with Mrs. Hoeper and her Global Studies classes until December 18 and then I will graduate

on December 20. I had a previous student teaching experience at West High School and am now looking forward to spending the next eight weeks at Wood . After graduation I would like to stay in the Davenport School District because I have had a great experience here. However, I am flexible and will keep my options open for any potential job that comes along.

Mid-quarter reports will be sent home the week of Dec. 2.  Please sign the report and return it to the AP teacher or write a note in the  planner that you have seen the mid-quarter report.

The Friday before break (Dec. 19) will be a 2-hour early out. And finally, 2nd quarter ends Jan. 15. You can expect grade reports within a week after the end of the quarter.

In order to help with the missing work situation, several of the team teachers (Science, Math, Language Arts, French) have been sending home missing assignment/grade reports every Monday. The reports should be stapled or stamped into your child’s planner. Please watch for these reports; your support in helping the students get all of their assignments turned in is very important to us. In other news, congratulations to Ms. Weipert who has recently been hired as Wood Intermediate’s Associate Principal. Putnam Fieldtrip

Jimmie T being mummified!

Mrs. Sinksen and students are chanting
to the Gods of the Afterlife.

What did the teenagers in Tunis totally turn on to for Christmas?   Was there a Merry Mesopotamian Season?   Did the

Carthaginians wish Hammurabi a Happy Hannukah?    Did the children of the Middle Ages know Santa Claus?    What about Kris Kringle in the "Kingdom"?    As we study the religions of the world in the month of December, we'll also be on the look-out for holiday celebrations throughout ancient times to better understand our present-day celebrations.

Ms. Moss-Farnan: Social Studies

Mrs. Johannsen: Reading

Reading classes are focusing on our fairly new text called Literature and Language.  The students have had practice learning how to use the book and read short stories from a variety of authors.  We are also focusing on main idea and author's purpose to prepare for Feb.’s ITBS tests.  Strengthen your child's reading skills- BAN THE TV and READ A BOOK!!!

Mrs. Duncan: Science

In Mrs. Duncan’s science class we have been doing a WebQuest. A WebQuest is a website on the computer that has an activity to accomplish with websites to research on. This has been a great deal of fun for the students. They are split up into groups and were able to pick a planet that they thought would be the best planet to live on. They gave a presentation on their planet using PowerPoint, and they were outstanding!! We love using technology!!!!

Mrs. Rapsilber: Algebraic Thinking

In our classes we’ve been busy solving the problems of the world…word problems that is! We can S-O-L-V-E just about anything! Then we had to actually have some order in the room as we used our operations. We conquered order of operations and are now in construction! We are building fraction kits and trading equivalents in class.

Please keep checking planners and remember ... homework is always due at the end of the week.

Also, if the students got a D or an F on the order of operations, they can come in after school and work with me and retake the test for a higher grade. If they choose this option, it must be done by Friday, Jan. 9

Mrs. Sinksen: Language Arts

We just began a new writing assignment. Students are writing paragraphs describing either bubble gum or popcorn using their five senses. YUM! Ask your child to see their paragraphs and use of sensory words. Don’t forget spelling tests are every Friday. Please study with your child every night.

Green Goblins' News

Science Update
From Mrs. Dembosky

The Astronomy unit ended with amazing news broadcasts about the possibility of Mars being colonized in the future!  Ask your student about Mars!  Their knowledge is incredible!

Next up – Genetics!  Students will be studying common characteristics of living things and why Earth has life on it.  This will progress into meiosis and mitosis, DNA studies, genetic mutations, and cloning.

Please check your student’s planner.  If notes were taken in science, your student should be bringing them home nightly to study.  It’s important to not only be an auditory learner, but a well-rounded learner as well.

Planner Party!!

A planner party was held to reward students who had their planner signed weekly.  They danced, made “spider” desserts, and had a great time!  Keep up the good work, students and parents!

ART AT WOOD

Sixth grade art students working hard on creating their name in one point perspective.

Mr. Houk, student teacher from St. Ambrose University , is guiding the seventh grade exploratory art students through the styles of art: realism, abstraction, fantasy and expressionism.

Pattern, pattern is everywhere as the eighth grade artists are discovering.

Physical Education – Mrs. Schultz, Mr. Owens, and Mr. Cartee
6th, 7th and 8th Grade

Roller-skating

Students will have the opportunity to participate in a roller-skating unit during physical education class.  The skates are rented and brought to the school for us to use for one week.  The cost is $5.00 and covers the rental for five days of skating.  The students will learn basic roller skating skills and play a variety of games.  Skating enhances balance, coordination, and motor skills as well as providing an excellent cardiovascular workout.  The students that have PE second quarter will skate Jan. 6th – 12th and the students in PE 3rd quarter will skate February 23rd – 27th.  I am looking forward to this exciting unit!

Presidential Fitness Testing

The students that had PE first quarter were given the five fitness tests: sit-ups, shuttle run, sit and reach, pull-ups, and the one-mile run.  Students that score in the 85th percentile on all five tests will be awarded the Presidential Fitness award at the end of the year.  The following student qualified for this award:

8th Grade:  Kailey BysCourtney Pilcher
7th Grade:  Zach Rohlf,  Ashley McNeal
6th grade: Cody Perrault, Dalton Smice

Congratulations to them on their outstanding achievement!

  Intramurals

Intramurals runs from 8:20 a.m. to   Students in 7th and 8th grade can come on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 6th grade students can come on Wednesdays and Fridays.  Students need to be dropped off by the back east gym door and will be let into the building at 8:20 a.m.  Basketball will begin after Thanksgiving and Wood will also be hosting a “Hoops for Heart” event during intramurals this year.  If a student has missed physical education class, he or she will need to make up those lost points. Attending 2 intramural sessions for every one day out of class can make up the lost points. We have had a great turn out for all grade levels and hope the interest continues.

GUIDANCE CORNER

The first quarter at Wood Intermediate went very well. It’s hard to believe that twenty-five percent of the school year has been completed. The old adage "Time flies when you’re having fun." certainly applies to the beginning of our school year. Wood is fortunate to have great students and parents. We appreciate your support.

Iowa Test of Basic Skills will be given February second, third and fourth. Our staff is working hard with all students to get them prepared for testing. We hope to have awesome test results this year. The teachers are using the eight-step process with our students. Research has proven that by using this process, test results will show improvement. Please encourage your child to do his/her best on all tests given.

First quarter report cards went home October 30th. The next mid-quarter is December second. Remember that first quarter and second quarter grades are averaged together to determine the semester grade which appears on the permanent record of each child. Students, who did well first quarter, keep up the good work. Students, who did not do as well, can still change the outcome of the semester grade by getting all work in and studying for tests.

Our Stepping Stones Program would be one way to improve your grades. Adults are available to assist students with their work. Please contact Tasha Thames at 391-6350 for more information about Stepping Stones.

Parents, as you progress through this school year, a recurring thought may be that raising children in middle school presents challenging times. There are no pat answers and no miracle cures for when children test the limits. Consider the following basic guidelines when providing discipline for you child:

Look for the positive.

Praise the behaviors you want your child to perform.
Make this a way of life.

Be Consistent.

Stick to the rules you make.
If you make an exception (for example, a later curfew because of a birthday party), make sure they understand this was for a special occasion.

Learn to Avoid Problems.

Plan how you will handle a problem.
Explain what will happen if he/she breaks a rule.
Anticipate what the problem might be and try to find a way to avoid it before it happens.

Act Quickly!

Consequences are most effective when they take place as soon as your child has misbehaved.

Be Firm!

You are the parent; do not sound afraid or wishy-washy.

Remain calm.

Remember you are an adult—not another middle school student.
Do not get hooked into an argument with your child.

Provide a good example.

f your child sees you exploding in anger, he or she will learn to respond in the same manner.

We hope these tips shared with us by Family Resources, Inc. will make discipline easier with your middle school student.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and winter holiday season.

Forget Floppies, USB Drives are Here

A USB drive (also known as flash drives, or pen drives) is a device which plugs directly into a computer via the USB port and acts like a little hard drive (or a big floppy drive).  It is solid state circuitry which replaces the need for floppy disks.  Currently 64Mg of storage on one of these devices costs only $20 and holds about the same amount of data as 46 floppy disks.  The device measures 3"X3/4"X3/8"l.  These are available to students and teachers through the office now.  These are a great alternative for the very fallible floppy disks.  These make a great way to backup your documents too!  Much of the content being created is too large for floppy disks and this causes problems for the students wishing to take work to and from school and between classes.  Check it out.

eLockers: Students have been using their eLockers. This has enabled them to logon to any school computer and save their work in a personal folder. Also, it has allowed teachers to check a student’s eLocker and offer advise or check their work. By second semester, all students in our school will have to logon the computer using their eLocker username and password before they can use the computer.

eDesks: Staff now too have a folder to save anything they want the students to access. This makes a convenient place for any teacher to put assignments in their eDesk and for students to retrieve those assignments.

Children’s Book Week was celebrated November 17-21. Displays included books from the 2003-04 Iowa Children's Choice Award Master List including: Among the Hidden, Belle Teal, Dear Whiskers, Esperanza Rising, Everything on a Waffle, The Ghost in Room 11, and The Hideout; as well as books from the books from the Battle of the Books 2003-04 list including: Shiloh, The Sign of the Beaver, Terror at the Zoo, This Island Isn’t Big Enough for the Four of Us!, Yolanda’s Genius, and Wrinkle in Time,

Grand Excursion: Students are being invited to read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain. This title as well as upcoming activities are planned to coincide with the June 2004 Grand Excursion of boats from the Quad Cities Area north to the Twin Cities of Minnesota that takes place locally June 25-27, 2004. Look of more information in this newsletter and through local area media agencies.

Bring your younger "Woodians" out for the show and enjoy reading about it for weeks to come.

Hyronomous A. Frog is a production of the Wood Drama Club. This club meets on Mondays throughout the school year. It is open to all interested sixth, seventh and eighth graders. We emphasize fun group games and activities that focus on movement, expression, teamwork, improvisation, and other theatre skills. We currently put on two productions a year. For questions, contact Mrs. Dunn-Schulz in Room 409.
