Office Corner:
Fees: Both semester service fees are now due. Service fees are $27 each semester ($54 per year). For those of you that have reduced fees, the cost is $17.40 per semester. In order to waive fees, you must have a new signed waiver on file every year. If you have any questions regarding fees, please call and ask for Vivian.
Also various fines from all previous years and this year need to be taken care of at this time.
Student absences: It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to call our office to report their student’s absence by 10:00 a.m. or they will be recorded as truant. You will be asked to provide their name, grade, symptoms or reason for absence and which parent is calling. Please read your child’s handbook located in the front of the planner to see the definition of an excused absence, Dr. notes are needed. You may address any questions regarding absences to Judy.
Lost & Found: Student’s will be called to the office to pickup labeled items, after attempting to get students to do this twice, items will be displayed on a table next to the main office for one week. Items will be donated to Goodwill on Tuesdays. Please take only items that belong to you.
Student Info: It is imperative that we have correct address and telephone numbers for each student at all times. The school district will be mailing information to parents at various times of the year and must have correct mailing addresses listed in their system. We are only as accurate as the information we receive from parents.
Secretary Office hours are 7:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and phone
calls will be answered during these times. Please be aware that we do not have
voice mail or an answering machine so there will not be anyone available to take
messages after 4:30p.m.
Students are reminded to make arrangements ahead of time for after school rides or plans. The office telephone may be used for emergencies only. Students should leave the building immediately after school unless they are supervised by a staff member and have parental permission given directly to the teacher or adult involved with a program. During inclement weather they may wait quietly in the Pit for their ride. We have had several students hanging around the building at night after school with no supervision.

Social Studies -- Mrs. Moss
Students have been collecting data for the Olympics, in conjunction with our study of Greece. They are in the process of constructing their own graphic to share the results of the Olympics for their particular country. The object of the lesson is for students to learn various ways of displaying information in a clear, concise manner. In March, we will be moving on to the Middle Ages and expect your student to bring home a sheet with choices for a project. More information will follow regarding the expectations and rubric for the assignment. Thanks to all of you for your continued support.
Language Arts and Reading
Mrs. (Hera) Sinksen and Mrs. (Athena) Johannsen
The DRP reading test is coming in March.... ask your student how the test went. This reading test helps to determine reading class placement for 7th grade. Classes are currently studying Greek mythology to enhance social studies focus on the Olympics. Which god or goddess do you resemble? Don't forget that students are required to be independently reading a novel. Encourage your student to read at home. When the book is complete, they must finish a book report for a grade. KEEP READING!!!
Science- Mrs. DuncanIn Science, we have been working on our fossils unit. We have been learning about what fossils are, how they form, and how to tell the age of fossils. We will be making our own fossils during this unit and become researchers on fossils found in Antarctica using a WebQuest. This is an exciting unit for us to explore! Just a reminder to the parents, please ask your child about grades every Monday in Science. They are updated and the students know what they are missing and their percentage in the class!
Algebra Preparatory – Mrs. DeBaene
We just finished up a unit on ratios and proportions. Now the students should be able to predict how many hotdogs they would be able to eat in a contest or how long it will take them to get to Chicago. We are looking forward to learning more about all the fun things we can do with fractions and decimals! An additional GOOD LUCK to Tiffany Nguyen, Erik Middleton, Derek Charles, Brittany Grosskopf, and Jessica Lovejoy at the 6th grade Math Bee on March 9!!

We are pleased to announce that we are having a student teacher in English starting in mid-March. Her name is Ms. Ehrecke and is from the University of Northern Iowa. Ms. Ehrecke has had several opportunities to work with students before her student teaching. Her first part of student teaching was at West High School, and she had a wonderful time. Now she is looking forward to being at Wood Intermediate.

In
American Studies, we are learning about the Mexican-American War.
I think the students will have a better appreciation of the different
perspectives on both sides of that conflict.
As a matter of fact, we are learning about the different perspectives of
the American experience when pertaining to the different ethnic groups and
genders as well.
Please feel free to ask your students what they have been learning.
As a result of this country compromising with the issue of equality for
all, we are now heading towards the Civil War.
The students will be learning about the events that led up to a war
between the North and the South.
They will also learn about the reasons both sides claim for fighting it.
Finally, they will learn about individual people and the significant
battles that were fought.
We will have a major project associated with the experience of most
African-Americans during this time period so please look out for it.
Hello
All! The
year is almost 75% complete!
The students in Science class have just finished working on the periodic
table, atoms, and elements.
They all created some wonderful ‘atom models’ and very colorful
brochures for their assigned element.
Please
remember that if any student is missing just 1 assignment for me, their grade
will remain an ‘I’ until it is turned in.
This counts for their projects, assignments in class, and labwork.
They also need to remember to write in their planner to keep them
organized and allow their parents to observe what we are doing in my class.
Feel free to call me to enquire about any questions you may have for me.

We
just finished writing persuasive papers.
Because we are integrating the history and language arts curriculum this
year, we will be using biographical research conducted in history class for our
compare and contrast papers.
These "papers" may take several different forms, including
Powerpoint presentations, chess sets, posters, comic books, dialogues, etc.
Students will also learn how to properly cite sources in MLA format.

Select Choir newly added to 7th Grade Next Year
I
n addition to the current 8th grade select choir (aka – 8th grade Concert Choir), we will be adding a choral performing ensemble to next year’s seventh grade curriculum. This select choir will be chosen through an audition similar to the 8th grade select choir during the spring. While musicianship is a key component towards selection, other equally important factors will be considered during audition. These factors will be reading skills, maturity, ability to follow directions, GPA and district reading scores.Auditions for 7th and 8th Grade Choirs set for March
The auditions for 7th and 8th graders will be completed by March 17. The process will last only a few minutes with the student singing scales as well as choosing a song to sing concluding with a short sight-reading passage 4 measure long. The skills necessary for the course are: accurate intonation (singing on pitch), a positive attitude, necessary district reading scores, a desire to become a better singer, and the ability of demonstrating self-control.
