Striving for Success!!

Thank you for your many efforts in helping make our ITBS testing process a successful one!  Thanks to all, counselors, teachers; students, and parents for help making our test days successful.  We are hoping to have the test results back shortly after Spring Break.

As you are aware, ITBS testing is the standardized test the State of Iowa uses to measure a school’s progress towards meeting the requirements of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation.  The staff and students worked hard this year in preparation for this test and we are hopeful our efforts will result in continual growth.

Once test results are received, Wood staff will review the results and plan additional instructional strategies to help raise student achievement scores in preparation for 2006-07.

Transfer Option Guidlines Enclosed

Snow Day Make-up
June 7th will now be the last day of student attendance.

Please note the change on your calendars.

Spring Time Blues are here!  It’s that time of the year when students begin to think of spring break and the summer soon to follow.  Educators usually see a dip in effort as students’ minds begin to wander.  Educators are challenged each year to keep students focused on school work and best effort.

We are getting close to the time of year when we examine individual student progress to determine grade advancement and registration placement for next year.  Please feel free to contact your child’s teachers, counselors, administrators at 391-6350 if you have  concerns.

Spring Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, March 23, from 4-8 PM.  If you have not been contacted by a teacher for a scheduled conference but would like to meet with your child’s teacher(s), please feel call us at 391-6350 to make arrangements.

The next two PTA meetings  are scheduled for Monday, April 24,  and Monday, May 22, from 6:30-7:30 PM in the LMC at Wood Intermediate School.

Check it out!!

The 8th Grade Dance is tentatively set for Friday, May 26th, from 6-8 PM.

The end of the third quarter is March 23.  There is no school on Friday, March 24.  Spring Break is scheduled the week of March 27 through March 31.  School resumes Monday, April 3.

Office Corner:

Fees: Both semester service fees are now due. Service fees are $27 each semester ($54 per year). For those of you that have reduced fees, the cost is $17.40 per semester. In order to waive fees, you must have a new signed waiver on file every year. If you have any questions regarding fees, please call and ask for Vivian.

Also various fines from all previous years and this year need to be taken care of at this time.

Student absences: It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to call our office to report their student’s absence by 10:00 a.m. or they will be recorded as truant. You will be asked to provide their name, grade, symptoms or reason for absence and which parent is calling. Please read your child’s handbook located in the front of the planner to see the definition of an excused absence, Dr. notes are needed. You may address any questions regarding absences to Judy.

Lost & Found: Student’s will be called to the office to pickup labeled items, after attempting to get students to do this twice, items will be displayed on a table next to the main office for one week. Items will be donated to Goodwill on Tuesdays. Please take only items that belong to you.

Student Info: It is imperative that we have correct address and telephone numbers for each student at all times. The school district will be mailing information to parents at various times of the year and must have correct mailing addresses listed in their system. We are only as accurate as the information we receive from parents.

Secretary Office hours are 7:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and phone calls will be answered during these times. Please be aware that we do not have voice mail or an answering machine so there will not be anyone available to take messages after 4:30p.m.

Students are reminded to make arrangements ahead of time for after school rides or plans. The office telephone may be used for emergencies only. Students should leave the building immediately after school unless they are supervised by a staff member and have parental permission given directly to the teacher or adult involved with a program. During inclement weather they may wait quietly in the Pit for their ride. We have had several students hanging around the building at night after school with no supervision.

Congratulations to the Students of the Month!!

The following students were awarded with a certificate and a treat from the cafeteria for their outstanding behavior. Keep if up!

Malcom O, Dehlakeio O, Andrew P, Sky P, Cedrick P, Michael P, Nicole P, Mario R, Mark R, Cooper R, Tyler R, Adam S, Marissa S

Social Studies -- Mrs. Moss

Students have been collecting data for the Olympics, in conjunction with our study of Greece. They are in the process of constructing their own graphic to share the results of the Olympics for their particular country. The object of the lesson is for students to learn various ways of displaying information in a clear, concise manner. In March, we will be moving on to the Middle Ages and expect your student to bring home a sheet with choices for a project. More information will follow regarding the expectations and rubric for the assignment. Thanks to all of you for your continued support.

Language Arts and Reading
Mrs. (Hera) Sinksen and Mrs. (Athena) Johannsen

The DRP reading test is coming in March.... ask your student how the test went. This reading test helps to determine reading class placement for 7th grade. Classes are currently studying Greek mythology to enhance social studies focus on the Olympics. Which god or goddess do you resemble? Don't forget that students are required to be independently reading a novel. Encourage your student to read at home. When the book is complete, they must finish a book report for a grade. KEEP READING!!!

Science- Mrs. Duncan

In Science, we have been working on our fossils unit.  We have been learning about what fossils are, how they form, and how to tell the age of fossils.  We will be making our own fossils during this unit and become researchers on fossils found in Antarctica using a WebQuest.  This is an exciting unit for us to explore!  Just a reminder to the parents, please ask your child about grades every Monday in Science.  They are updated and the students know what they are missing and their percentage in the class!

Algebra Preparatory – Mrs. DeBaene

We just finished up a unit on ratios and proportions. Now the students should be able to predict how many hotdogs they would be able to eat in a contest or how long it will take them to get to Chicago. We are looking forward to learning more about all the fun things we can do with fractions and decimals! An additional GOOD LUCK to Tiffany Nguyen, Erik Middleton, Derek Charles, Brittany Grosskopf, and Jessica Lovejoy at the 6th grade Math Bee on March 9!!

A cross-curricular project!
Habari!  Mrs. Striegel’s and Mrs. Hoeper’s classes have been studying the cultures of various African countries over the past few weeks.  Each student was assigned an African country in Global Studies.  Research was completed in the library and in the computer lab during both classes.  With their research, students completed an ABC Book in Global Studies and a research paper in Language Arts.  Both assignments were due in mid-February.  Garrett Rhodes commented that he thought the assignment was fairly easy, while Kelci Toliver said, “I think we should have done two different countries.”  Although students may have mixed reviews on the inter-disciplinary unit, African culture has definitely been on their minds!

We’ve Completed the I.T.B.S.

We have completed the 2006 I.T.B.S. testing for Wood Intermediate.  This year, we are proud to say that students showed a great amount of effort.  When asked about how they felt they did on the test, most students said that they felt better prepared and took it more seriously.  We are now anxiously waiting for the results.

8th Grade Nebulas

Mr. Gunphries: American Studies

In American Studies, we are learning about the Mexican-American War.  I think the students will have a better appreciation of the different perspectives on both sides of that conflict.  As a matter of fact, we are learning about the different perspectives of the American experience when pertaining to the different ethnic groups and genders as well.  Please feel free to ask your students what they have been learning.   As a result of this country compromising with the issue of equality for all, we are now heading towards the Civil War.  The students will be learning about the events that led up to a war between the North and the South.  They will also learn about the reasons both sides claim for fighting it.  Finally, they will learn about individual people and the significant battles that were fought.  We will have a major project associated with the experience of most African-Americans during this time period so please look out for it.

I would like to thank all of you for your input this year.  I would also like to thank you for being an extremely cooperative group of parents.  I will truly miss this year’s class of students.  I wish nothing but a blessed life for each and every one of them.  Good luck at North, and remember, drink plenty of Diet Mt. Dew and eat plenty of gummy bears so that you can be as buff as Mr. H.

Ms. “Weird Science” Hayek:  Science

Hello All!  The year is almost 75% complete!  The students in Science class have just finished working on the periodic table, atoms, and elements.  They all created some wonderful ‘atom models’ and very colorful brochures for their assigned element.

Please remember that if any student is missing just 1 assignment for me, their grade will remain an ‘I’ until it is turned in.  This counts for their projects, assignments in class, and labwork.  They also need to remember to write in their planner to keep them organized and allow their parents to observe what we are doing in my class.  Feel free to call me to enquire about any questions you may have for me.  391-6350.

Mr. “Sub-Total” Proctor: Mathematics

It’s getting close to the end of the year and so much to do.  Finance Park is this month.  The students should all be able to tell you about it.  It gives each student a budgets that they have to live on - as it relates  to the real world.  Some outstanding students this last nine weeks are:  Andrew Hoggard, Brad Frick, Eric Villalpando, Eric Meeks, Ryan Kelly, Jacob Ringsdorf, Tiffany Waterman, Brittany Staack, Shanicka Davis-Sims, Triet Bui, Jessica Logsdon, Eric Schmidt, Arielle Followwill, Sara Hafner, and Cassie Schulz.  I  hope that the next few weeks show improvement in everyone’s grades.  Please check with you son/daughter to see if they are current with the class.  If you have any questions - please call me.  Think fishing.

Mr. “Pulitzer Prize” Butikofer

We just finished writing persuasive papers.  Because we are integrating the history and language arts curriculum this year, we will be using biographical research conducted in history class for our compare and contrast papers.  These "papers" may take several different forms, including Powerpoint presentations, chess sets, posters, comic books, dialogues, etc.  Students will also learn how to properly cite sources in MLA format.

JA Finance Park :

Our team of students was involved in JA Finance Park, an economic education program at the intermediate school level.  Students prepared for a real life simulation during the month of February in their classes.  Lessons included budgeting, finance, taxes, stocks, jobs, etc…  As a culminating activity, we traveled to the Finance Park site where students balanced their career incomes with personal spending choices.  We hope students enjoyed their experience and gained some valuable money sense that will serve them well in the future.

We are looking forward to meeting with our in-coming sixth graders and answering their questions about Wood. Mr. Herrig is planning a parent information night for in-coming sixth grade parents in May. More details will be forthcoming.

Registration for our current students was completed the week of February 21st. Several changes will be happening in the fall at Wood Intermediate School. The core classes, Reading, Math, Social Studies, English and Science, will be sixty minutes in length instead of the current 44 minutes.

Students may not register for both Band and Orchestra. Only eighth graders will be given the opportunity to take Spanish I or French I. The school day for students will be extended at least ten minutes.

The Degrees of Reading Power Test will be given the week of March 13th to sixth graders and those seventh graders who did not meet the benchmark of 56 as sixth graders. The test will be given in Reading classes. Please encourage your child to do their very best.

Spring break will begin on Saturday, March 25th and end on Sunday, April 2nd. School will resume on April 3rd. There will be no school for students on Good Friday, April 14th and Easter Monday, April 17th.

Select Choir newly added to 7th Grade Next Year

In addition to the current 8th grade select choir (aka – 8th grade Concert Choir), we will be adding a choral performing ensemble to next year’s seventh grade curriculum. This select choir will be chosen through an audition similar to the 8th grade select choir during the spring. While musicianship is a key component towards selection, other equally important factors will be considered during audition. These factors will be reading skills, maturity, ability to follow directions, GPA and district reading scores.

Auditions for 7th and 8th Grade Choirs set for March

The auditions for 7th and 8th graders will be completed by March 17. The process will last only a few minutes with the student singing scales as well as choosing a song to sing concluding with a short sight-reading passage 4 measure long. The skills necessary for the course are: accurate intonation (singing on pitch), a positive attitude, necessary district reading scores, a desire to become a better singer, and the ability of demonstrating self-control.

Show Choir Show Off March 20

Mr. Tadlock’s concert Choir will be attending the DCSD annual Show Off show choir performance held Monday, March 20 from Noon-3 pm. at the RiverCenter. The students will be seeing both varsity and prep show choirs from each of Davenport’s three high schools.

DCSD 8th Grade Honor Choir March 21

The district will be hosting an honor choir festival held at the West High auditorium on the night of March 21 beginning at 7 pm. Participating in the District Honor Choir from Wood are: Kristen Adams, Kate Brown, Suzie Brownell, Aaron Dosart, Toria Duffey, Jacob Fetterer, Dakota Frederick, Heather Gajeski, Megan Grim, Andrew Hoggard, Arnisha Joseph, Keith Kelley, Jessica Logsdon, Kurt Meyer, Justin Millage, Ngoc Pham, Kelsie Poole, Tommy Price, Alex Ramirez, Cassie Schulz, Issak Sund, Tiffany Waterman, Emma York, and Whitney Young.

Wood Spring Vocal Concert slated for March 22

The Spring Vocal Concert will be held on Wednesday, March 22 beginning at 7 pm in the Wood gym. Scheduled to perform are the 3rd quarter sixth graders performing a variety of songs, the 2nd semester 8th grade Mixed Chorus trying out their newly learned choral repertoire, and the 8th grade Concert Choir performing a wide array of 9th grade choral literature. The concert is free and will last approximately 45 minutes. We hope to see you there.
