Volume V, Issue 3
Third Quarter, 2004-2005

There is more in us than we know.  If we can be made to see it, perhaps, for the rest of our lives, we will be unwilling to settle for less.” Kurt Hahn (1886-1974) Founder, Outward Bound

Striving for Success!!

Thank you for your many efforts in helping make our ITBS testing process a successful one!  Thanks to all, counselors, teachers; students, and parents for help making our test days successful.  We are hoping to have the test results back by Spring Break.

As you are aware, ITBS testing is the standardized test the State of Iowa uses to measure a school’s progress towards meeting the requirements of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation.  The staff and students worked hard this year in preparation for this test and we are hopeful our efforts will result in continual growth.

Once test results are received, Wood staff will review the results and plan additional instructional strategies to help raise student achievement scores in preparation for 2005-06.

How are we doing?

Enclosed in this newsletter you will find a survey asking your input regarding the experience your child had as a participant in athletic activities at Wood.  Please take a moment to complete the survey and return it to Matt Debaene, AD. We will use the results of this survey to examine ways we might employ to provide future Davenport varsity athletes a more positive experience.

Spring Time Blues are here!  It’s that time of the year when students begin to think of spring break and the summer soon to follow.  Educators usually see a dip in effort as students’ minds begin to wander.  Educators are challenged each year to keep students focused on school work and best effort.  We are getting close to the time of year when we examine individual student progress to determine grade advancement and registration placement for next year.  Please feel free to contact your child’s teachers, counselors, administrators at 391-6350 if you have concerns.

Check it out!!

Sports physicals will be available from 6-8 PM at the following sites for a cost of $10:

Central High School, Wednesday, April 27

West High School, Wednesday, May 4

North High School, Wednesday, May 18

Physicals are good for one year and are required if your child wants to participate in athletics.

The next two Parent-Principal Partnership meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, March 15, from 6-7 PM at Fillmore Elementary School and Thursday, April 28, 6-7 PM at TBA.  Watch the Wood marquee for more information.

The end of the third quarter is March 24.  There is no school on Friday, March 25.  Spring Break is scheduled the week of March 28 through April 1.  School resumes Monday, April 4.

 Office telephone (563) 391-6350

Office Corner:

This is a reminder that service fees are now due. Service fees are $29 each semester ($58 per year). For those of you that have reduced fees, the cost is $17.40 per semester. In order to waive fees, you must have a signed waiver on file every year. If you have any questions regarding fees, please call and ask for Vivian.

Also various fines from all previous years need to be taken care of at this time. This will include library fines, gym locks, textbook damage or loss, delinquent service fees and fundraiser balances. These fees will show on your fee letter as a "past balance due".

All students absent from school are required to have a parent/guardian call our office. You will be asked for their name, grade, symptoms or reason for absence and which parent is calling. Please read your child’s handbook located in the front of the planner to see the definition of an excused absence. You may address any questions regarding absences to Tara.

Lost & Found: Student’s will be called to the office to pick up identified items, after attempting to get students to do this twice, items will be displayed on a table next to the main office for one week. Items will be donated to Goodwill on Tuesdays. Please take only items that belong to you.

It is imperative that we have correct address and telephone numbers for each student at all times. The school district will be mailing information to parents at various times of the year and must have correct mailing addresses listed in their system. We are only as accurate as the information we receive from parents.

Secretary Office hours are 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. and phone calls will be accepted during these times.

Students are reminded to make arrangements ahead of time for after school rides or plans. The office telephone may be used for emergencies only. Students should be leaving the building after school unless they have made arrangements to stay with a staff member or program

8th Grade Nebulas

President James Humphries-Madison: American Studies

Myself, my wife Dolly, the Vice-President Froaches, and Secretary of State Herr were sitting down for a nice meal of chowder, fish and chips and root beer. All of a sudden, this knucklehead in a bright red spiffy uniform runs by and mistakes the White House for a fire pit. What in the world was he thinking? The next thing I know the whole place is up in flames. The first thing I did was to grab all of my Revolutionary War trading cards (hey a man needs his priorities), while my wife Dolly grabbed the picture of George Washington that was hanging above the fireplace. Needless to day, as soon as I figure out whom the fire starting knucklehead is, I will have him pay for his carelessness. In the mean time, the White House will have to be completely rebuilt.

Anyway, as far as our relations with Great Britain, they couldn't be any better. I think I have them right where I want them. They would never think of getting into another war with us because they know that we would have to take a serious beating out on them. I know that you must feel that I seem too self-assured, but after all, am I not the stud that I am? After all, I am the king of preparation! Anyway, I hope that you all keep well until I have the chance to write again.

Yours truly,
President James Humphries-Madison

Mr. "Sub-Total" Proctor: Math

Math will really be hopping this month. We have Finance Park the first week in March, in which students get a salary and form their own budget as if they were adults. This is an excellent program - check with your son/daughter about it. Algebraic Thinking will be working with the slope intercept form. Algebra will be working with systems of equations and inequalities. I send home a grade report every two weeks. If you are not getting one, please ask your son/daughter or call me. This is to try to keep students current with the class so grades will not fall. I try to stay after school on Tues. and Thurs. nights for students to makeup work or get extra help. If you have any questions, please call me.

Ms. "Weird Science" Gersdorf: Science

This quarter in Science the students are studying atoms. They have two major projects that are due on March 18th and they SHOULD have handouts that talk about each of these. The first project is to create a brochure of the element that was assigned to them from research off of www.webelements.com or from the library. They have a sample brochure that states exactly what I want included in the brochure. The second project is to build their element’s atom so I can hang it from my ceiling in my classroom. The more colorful, creative, and inexpensive these projects are, the better the grade! Any questions, feel free to give me a call at 391-6350 or e-mail me at gersdorfe@mail.davenport.k12.ia.us.

Mr. "Pulitzer Prize" Butikofer: Language Arts

Students have just finished writing S.T.E.P.S. persuasive papers, and now they are working on compare and contrast papers. For example...

Why are Bryce and Chas similar to gypsies?
They walk to and fro.

Why is Kebbins Pollard different from Mr. Butikofer?
Mr. B is un-young, Kebbins is a Young Un.

MIND-BENDER

What did Watson say to Sherlock when Janee Morgan saw a snake?
"Holmes, kill it."

Davenport School Dress Codes
Why Start Now?!
By:  Joel Stoneking, Scott Dressler & Tyler Klenske

Robotic drones walking up and down the halls.  Single file.  Everything is black and white.  No color.  No creativity.  No freedom!

If you have ever had a dress code, you probably know what I mean.  Being in a white button down shirt and black pants all the time isn’t exactly exciting.  Think of Leonardo DeVinci, the famous renaissance painter. He always wore crazy combinations of pinks and purples.  Possibly the most inventive and creative man in history was never held down by a simple and boring black and white.  Why should we?

We shouldn’t have a dress code, because we would all  look the same.  It would be confusing to tell who is who.  All kids should be individuals.  Teachers shouldn’t have to be confused like that.  Children should show creativity through what they wear.

If we had a dress code, they would be making all of the decisions for us.  What we eat and who our teachers are is already decided for us.  I want to be able to decide what I wear every day.  The way we dress is important to us, because it allows us to be ourselves.  That’s why we don’t want to change what we already have.

Math

Mrs. Rapsilber

We have been working on ratios, proportions, and percents in math and will have our assessment by the end of February. As with any assessments, the students will bring their grade home and will need a parent to sign the form if they DONT have to retake the test. Please remember, if they do retake it, the second score is the one that’s kept.

We will then be down to the last three months and the last three topics!!! Get the ratio??? Our last three will be fractions, decimals, and geometry. Please remind your students to do their homework so they get passing grades. Davenport has cut summer school programs for middle and senior high students, so they really need to dig in their last semester and get good grades.

Again, any questions, please feel free to call. I am available after three to help.

P.S. Each year the 6th grade teams at Wood enter the 6th Grade Area Math Contest. The gold team members were chosen in November and have been working very hard to get ready. The Math Contest will be March 15 this year so wish us well. The brave team members are Dusty Curtis, Melanie Huettman, Ben Knapper, James Lovejoy, and Antonea Stuckey. Good luck team!

Science

Mrs. Duncan

In Science, our new unit is on fossils and the four time periods. Students will be making fossils, doing power points, and projects during this unit. This is when the students can use their Play-doh to make fossils using plaster. Make sure to keep looking for grade reports every two weeks for students that have a D or an F in Science stapled in their planner. This is my way of letting you know that your child has make up work to do to better his or her grade. Students can come in the morning any day to do make up work for me. Also, sometime during this quarter I will have a long term sub due to my pregnancy leave. My guest teacher’s name is Mrs. Sampson if you have questions for her while I am gone. Have a great rest of the year!!

Reading

Mrs. Johannsen

In reading, Mrs. J’s and Mrs. S’s classes are beginning our next novel called The Watson’s Go to Birmingham, 1963. This novel explores the civil rights movement as a family travels to Birmingham to visit relatives. We are also studying persons and events that are important to Black History Month.

DRP (Degrees of Reading Power) test is the week of February 28- March 4.

Language Arts

Mrs. Sinksen

In Language Arts, we are finishing up our Compare and Contrast Essays. Please ask to look at your child’s paper to see what they compared and contrasted. We will beginning a new project called Write Across America, where the students will be writing to other sixth grade students from all over the United States.

“LOCK INN”

Students played volleyball, basketball, table tennis, and board games or watched movies in the library.  We had a great response from parents that donated MANY baked items and pop to sell during the evening.  At 11 PM pizza, breadsticks, chips and salsa, and pop were provided before “Lights Out” at 1 AM.  In the morning the students were treated to donuts, bagels, and juice before being picked up at 7 AM.

A BIG thanks to the staff at Wood, student body, parents, and local business that made this event so successful!

On February 11, 2005 a “Lock Inn” was held to raise money for tsunami relief.  Students paid $10 to attend the event which started at 6 PM and ended on Saturday at 7AM.  Jeff James and Missy Sullivan from B100 donated their time to provide music from 7 – 9 PM.

We had tremendous support from the community and Yolanda Jefferson was responsible for getting many of the donations.  HyVee (gift card), Walmart (gift card), Hooters (gift card), McDonalds (cups), Carlos O’Kellys (chips and salsa), Sedexho Food service (individual bags of chips), Olive Garden (salad, breadsticks, pasta for adults), Ryan Steak House (chicken, cookies, tarts), Old Country Buffet (fruit & cookies), Rudy Taco East Village (coupons), Chuck Cheese (coupons), Panera (bagels), Pizza Hut Belt (8 pizzas), and Godfathers East Village (discounted pizzas).  We were able to raised $4,000 that will be contributed to UNICEF.

Guidance Newsletter

Registration for next year has been completed for our 8th grade students. This process concluded on Feb 14th, when the North Counselors spent the day with our 8th graders checking individual student schedules, answering questions about coursework and talking to the students about the High School experience. A huge Thank You to Mrs. Scott and Mr. Humphries who helped to coordinate this effort within their classrooms.

Preparing our 6th and 7th grade students for the following academic year is also underway. They will be asked to update their address, phone numbers and general demographic information so that we have accurate data on all Wood students. That certainly helps the school do their part in sending our Wood family information via the mail as well as knowing exactly where a Parent could be located in the event of an emergency, they will also be making elective decisions for next years academic schedule. Please look for that information to come home for your review the last week in February.

We look forward to sharing ITBS results with you sometime after spring break. As you know as a result of previous correspondence and the coverage in the newspaper, it is important to all of us to see improvement with our students at Wood. We also know it is essential that we look at each individuals student score report. Our hope is that your children will experience having made improvement since our last testing effort in 2/04.

Our 6th grade students will also take the Degrees of Reading Power the week of Feb

28th. This is a required assessment at the district level which measures a students Reading Comprehension. The goal is for all students who sit the test to meet the benchmark score of 56, before they exit the Intermediate school experience. That means current 7th grade students may also be required to take the assessment again. Please encourage your children to do the very best they can with the DRP.

The Mid-Quarter will have passed by the time the Newsletter goes out. They were sent home with students on Friday February 18th. Please continue to give your children the support and encouragement they may need, to continue their best effort with all of their classes. Your continued support with their schoolwork is valuable and appreciated.
