Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.”

Late Edition Apology!!  Due to unforeseen technology complications, I apologize for the late edition of this year’s first newsletter.  Some articles may reference events (conferences) already completed, please disregard.

Welcome All!

Jim Caparula and I would like to welcome you to the 2004-05 school year.  As new administrators to the building, we will work hard to get to know you and your children and to provide a quality education for all. Wood Intermediate will again participate in an all-school fundraiser.  Our goal this year is $30,000 to assist in additional technology purposes and activities/athletic equipment.  Thanks for all your support.

The staff and administration at Wood Intermediate would like to thank you for the smooth beginning to the 2004-05 school year!  Your attendance at Open House was appreciated; as are the many comments you have provided us.  You will be receiving these newsletters each quarter and if you have a topic you would like include, please contact Rick  Herrig, Principal or Jim Caparula, Associate Principal at 391-6350.

The first few weeks of school Mr. Caparula met with every student to review procedures, rules, and changes in the District Proactive

Discipline Policy.  Please be aware that canine sweeps will be conducted during the school year as part of the Davenport Schools’ Substance Abuse Prevention Program.  We encourage you to take the time to sit down with your student and review information found in the student planner.  Please remember if you have concerns in regard to your student’s “Life At Wood” call his/her teacher advisor, counselor, or administrator.  Working together, we can provide a positive experience for all students.

Parent/Teacher Conferences  were held Monday and Wednesday, October 4 and 6, from 4-8 PM, and Thursday, October 7, from 8-Noon.  If you need to arrange a conference time, please

contact your student’s counselor or team.  New this year are the Parent-Principal Partnership meetings held monthly throughout the district.  These meetings will be held at various locations and are intended for parents to meet with building administrators to discuss issues and provide solutions to help all students achieve success.  Upcoming meeting dates and locations:

Geography Poetry

Submitted by Mrs. Johnson

By:  Jacob Beck
When Neil Armstrong looked down from space he saw the earth from a weird place.  People live in deserts, on islands, and in the woods – creating businesses and selling goods.  Only 30% of the world is covered in land.  From there, people get dirt rocks, and sand.  Learning geography is really fun – we really learn a ton!

By:   Kyle Williams
People live in various environments so their needs are met for retirements.  Some want water and sand.  Others want mountains and land.  We all like to visit different places.  Mexico is the place to see the mesas.  If we want to live and play in the snow, Alaska is the place we’ll go!

By:  Diann Herington
Climate and movement, region and location.  Greenland and Antarctica have no vegetation.  The North Sea, The Black Sea, The Dead Sea, and The Red Sea .  These are all parts of geography.

By:  Jaque Dinnes
Hills and valleys, streets and alleys, deserts and caves, oceans and waves, rivers and seas, geography!

We will be learning exciting science this year. Some of the areas that we will be learning are the formation of a star, constellations, DNA, adaptations, fossils, and many others. We will be going to Nahant Marsh for a field trip on September 29th to learn about water testing, how compost facilities work, and about the animals of the marsh.

Hello. My name is Mrs. Sinksen. This is my sixth year at Wood Intermediate, and my second year teaching 6th grade language arts and reading. I received my B.A. from University of Iowa and will graduate in May from St. Ambrose with a master’s degree in Special Education. In my spare time I enjoy scrap booking, camping, and bowling. I really look forward to spending time with my husband, Mr. Sinksen, puppy, Deogie, and my twin daughters, due in December.

My name is Ms. Maynard and last year I took a leave of absence because I was deployed to Iraq with the 389th ENBN.

This year I’m teaching with the Golden Cobras as a 6th grade resource teacher. I’ve taught for five years at Wood Intermediate School as a special education teacher.

My son, Justin, is a sophomore at Central High School. Some activities my son and I enjoy together include biking, movies, and basketball.

My name is Mrs. Rapsilber and I teach algebraic foundations for the 6th grade gold team. This is my third year at Wood and I enjoy the staff and kids very much. My husband's name is Scott and my three children are Tim, 15, Matt, 13, and Caleb, 4. They keep me really busy but they are a lot of fun. I look forward to working with you to support the 6th graders throughout the year.

Hi! I'm Mrs. Johannsen and I teach reading to the Cobra's ! I have 2 children, a dog, a cat and last but not least a husband. I enjoy gardening, making jewelry and reading (imagine that!). Remember to read at home and look for monthly book orders!!

Guidance Corner

The 2004-2005 school year had a great start at Wood.  New students are becoming more acclimated to our school and all students are enjoying the Wood experience!  Enrollment has grown to over 800 students.  We welcomed several new teachers to our dedicated staff.  Open House was a great success on September 7th.  It was fun to talk with parents and share information.

Mid-Quarter grades will be determined on September 29th and sent home the first full week of October.  Remember, the mid-quarter mark is not a final grade.  It simply informs students and parents where each student stands grade-wise midway through the grading period.  Students have the opportunity to improve each grade before the first quarter grade is given on November first.

Iowa Test of Basic Skills will be given the first week of February.  We are preparing students for this test by implementing many different strategies including the research based eight-step process.  This process involves formatting our instruction to resemble the types of materials and questions used on the ITBS.  The staff believes this will enhance the abilities of our students and enable them to do their very best.

The Degrees of Reading Power Test will be given during the month of March.  This test is given to all sixth graders and to those 7th and 8th graders who have not met the reading benchmark determined by the DCSD.

The counselors will be visiting the sixth grade classrooms to give students a better understanding of who we are and what we do.  All students have the opportunity to visit with their counselor. We meet with students on an individual basis as well as in groups to work out concerns.  The counselors also work closely with parents who have questions and concerns about their children

Stepping Stones will begin on September 27th.  This is a wonderful program to supplement your child’s learning.  Adults are available to assist students with their homework.  Stepping Stones will also be offering other exciting opportunities for our students.  Parents must have their authorization forms filled out and signed prior to September 27th in order to begin on the first day.  Please call Tasha Thames at 391-6350 for more information.
