Our
Physical Education classes are mostly co-ed but two days a week classes are
separated. We have found this
helpful in participation, advancement in skill level, and in the reduction of
discipline problems.
Our
goal here at Wood, is to give your daughter the skills and confidence to enjoy
health and fitness throughout their lifetime.
This
year we are personalizing your child’s fitness activity by the use of a heart
rate monitor. This helps all
students work on their intensity, based on their own fitness level.
A
fitness report card will also be mailed home at the end of the school year.
This is a private and personal report card on your child’s fitness
level.
The
most frequently asked questions are…
What
does my child need to wear for gym class? We
ask that all students bring a pair of tennis shoes that may get dirty with
outside use. The shoes will be
denoted for gym use only and kept in their gym locker. Students should wear a
t-shirt, shorts, athletic pants, or a scort.
Parents should also consider if their daughter needs a sports bra.
Where
can my child change their clothes for class? Students
will have a choice to change in the locker room area or the shower stalls, with
curtains on them.
Are
showers required? No, showers are not required, but a towel will be provided if needed.
If a shower is taken it, must be completed in the allotted 5 minute
changing time.
As
a parent, if you feel that it would be best that your daughter not participate
in physical education due to illness or recent injury, a written note is
required to excuse them from physical education class, for a maximum of one
day. To be excused longer
than one day, a doctor’s note is required.
Any
student with an excused absence will be allowed to make-up
points missed. Here is how a make-up can be done.
Students earn 10 points for each day in physical education. These points can be earned back by doing one of the following:
Before school:
§
Participating in an
intramural activity.
Intramurals are before school from 8:20 to 8:50 am.
6th grade is held on Mondays and Thursdays. 7th
& 8th grade is on Tuesdays and Fridays.
One intramural activity makes-up five classroom points.
After school:
§
RUN 1 MILE, “PACER” RUN to 30 laps or Use HRM and be in the zone for
12 minutes.
These options must be prearranged with your teacher.
For student unable come before or after school:
§
Writing a one-page paper on any sport or athlete of their
choice. If typed, use a size
14” font with a ½ inch space margin on top and bottom.
Paper can be double-spaced except for student name and grade.
This full-page paper must be WRITTEN IN YOUR OWN WORDS.
This is not a research paper.
