  • Orchestra Finale Concert A Huge Success

The Festival of Orchestras was held on Monday, May 14th in the North High School Gym.  String orchestra students in grades 4-12 from North, Wood, Harrison, Truman, and Fillmore under the direction of Ms. Ottesen, Mrs. Kendell, and Mrs. Hartmann performed for a packed gym.   Each orchestra (4th Grade String Orchestra, 5th Grade String Orchestra, 6th Grade String Orchestra, 7th/8th Grade String Orchestra, High School String Orchestra) performed several pieces and then combined for this year’s Mass Orchestra piece, “The Final Countdown” in honor of Mrs. Kendell and Mrs. Hartmann’s final concert after each teaching 33 years, in the Davenport Schools.  Additionally, Mrs. Kendell and Mrs. Hartmann on violins,  and instrumental colleague Mrs. Reiter on piano (also retiring after 33 years of teaching) performed the first movement of the “Concerto for Two Violins” by J.S. Bach.

The North Instrumental Music Booster presented beautiful flowers to the retiring directors and had cupcakes for all of the performing students.  Additionally, the Intermediate and High School students presented much appreciated posters of well wishes and memories to Mrs. Kendell and Mrs. Hartmann.

Mrs. Kendell and Mrs. Hartmann met at the University of Iowa while violin music education majors. Both studied with Allen Ohmes, who through connections in the Quad City Symphony, helped arrange job interviews in Davenport.  Mrs. Kendell interviewed at Wood and has been at Wood and Harrison schools for all 33 years.  Mrs. Hartmann interviewed at Walcott, spent many years there, and joined the North area orchestra program in 2013
