Falcon Nation Sports ~ Athletic Director:  Garet Egel

    August 2020

Welcome to West High School, the home of the Falcons!!!

Hello Falcon Fans!!!! First I hope this finds everyone healthy and doing well. What a year we have had dealing with this Covid Virus and all the changes it has made on all our lives. Hang in there Falcons. We are Strong!!!  It’s a Great Day to be a Falcon!!!!

We are excited to have the chance to play sports this fall. I am sure everyone feels the same way. With that being said, this will take some extra work on all of parts to help keep everyone safe. Sporting events may look differently this fall and possibly in the future. Stay tuned for updates on guidelines we must follow during this trying time.

I am happy to be the Athletic Director here at Davenport West High School. I am a lucky man!!! As you know I attended high school here, the Class of ’82 (The BEST Class). Some important people impacted my life and I would like to thank them for giving me the opportunity to teach, coach and begin my career as an administrator. Thank you to the following: the late Roger Harrington and Mel Warner. Cy Robinson, Clancy Simmons, Paul Flynn, Bruce Potts for hiring me for my first teaching position and administrator Nancy Jacobsen for hiring me for my first admin position. Thank you for giving me the chance and experience to help start my career as a coach and educator.

I am excited about the direction our athletic program is heading. We were able to hire some quality individuals this past year who are not only knowledgeable coaches, but they are people of high character. We hired Brandon Krusey as Head Football Coach of the 2020 Falcons. We brought back Steve Saladino as Head Softball Coach and we were able to hire many experienced assistant coaches.

Our expectations for our student/athletes are very high and during this season I am confident you will see great strides in our programs. The Covid era did put a halt in everyone’s training in the weight room but, we will begin that much needed work as the school year approaches. Our student/athletes will be pushed to improve in this area which will show on our athletic fields and courts.

As we are enjoying the talents of our students this fall, please remember that we are members of the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and we fully support both organizations with respect to sportsmanship, ethics and integrity. We encourage all spectators to model a positive attitude and continue to give our students the support they deserve and appreciate. Be a fan, cheer the triumphs and praise the efforts of all our students. Remember to practice social distancing and please wear a mask to our events to help keep all of us safe.

Thank you for being a part of the West High Family. Enjoy our sports seasons and best of luck to our students and coaches.
