Letter from Principal Jacobsen Regarding Whooping Cough

The district received word this afternoon that a student at West High has tested positive for pertussis (whooping cough).

According to policy outlined by the Scott County Health Department, the families of classmates who have potentially been exposed will receive letters explaining the details, level of possible risk and common symptoms.  The appropriate teachers and other staff at West will be notified.  The amount of time spent with the students is a factor, so those who spent just brief amounts of time with the students such as in the cafeteria or in hallways or for other short periods are at minimal risk.  At this time, there have been no other confirmed cases at WHS.

The district will continue to monitor the situation at WHS, working directly with the Scott County Health Department to identify the potential for any possible new cases and in communication with parents.  We understand that this is a worrisome issue for students and their families and will work to keep everyone informed of any updates in the situation.

Parents who are concerned and who have questions about pertussis or whooping cough can contact the Scott County Health Department at http://www.scottcountyiowa.com/health/ or 326-8618 for more information.
