  • Nintey-Year-Old Veteran John Gaultier Keeps it Real

John Gualtier from Vinton, Iowa, spoke about his role as medic and experience as a liberator of the camp, Gunskirken Lager, the one that General Eisenhower visited. He spoke about the unspeakable–as seen from his 18-year-old perspective both as a medic and as a liberator.  He detailed the toll his participation took on his life after the war ended.  He asked the students to do something for him as he closed…”Get your education.  Listen to your teachers.  Go home and tell your parents you love them.”  [For all those who never had a chance to do so.] His most prestigious award received to date is the Jefferson Award, a national award created by Jacqueline Kennedy for volunteerism. Last night at the Yom Hashoah (Night of Remembrance) John received a local award for his service as a WWII veteran. Thanks to Ms. Toppler for bringing him to West.
