West High’s Welding Students + Eagle Scout = Awesome

WHS-Sunflower-225x300Giant black-eyed Susans blossomed at Davenport’s Sunderbruch Park with the help of Davenport West High School’s welding students and a prospective Eagle Scout.  The students fabricated and painted the flowers over several months. Leading to the park’s hiking trails, they were installed last week.  Thomas Schreiner, the prospective Eagle Scout and a welding student, said class members each put in about 30 hours into the six giant bouquets. Each piece has three flowers and stands about 7 feet tall.  The idea came from black-eyed Susans that stand at the Family Museum in Bettendorf.

West High Freshman Leadership Class Goes to Wapsi Ed. Center

10174944_317193161767123_7870297278708165606_n-300x201This April, Ms. Saladino’s Freshman Leadership Class at West High School visited the Wapsi Educational Center and West Lake Park on a “Great Minds” trip funded by the Davenport Schools Foundation. Students learned about nature, water safety, canoeing, and kayaking. As important, the students engaged in teambuilding and leadership and character education with exercises in self-control, preparation, and respect. Thank you Davenport Schools Foundation for your ongoing support of Great Minds in Davenport classrooms and around the community!
