    Eight Grade Students Invited to Apply to CITI High!


    West High School is excited to announce the start of CITI High (Career Institute of Technology and Innovation) for the start of the 2014-15 school year.  8th grade students are invited to apply to CITI high—their intermediate counselors have applications.  Some key points of CITI High are:

    1.     You must apply.  The identified pathways are:
            a.      Advanced Manufacturing
            b.      Business
            c.      Computer Science
            d.      Design & Engineering
            e.      Education
            f.       Medical & Health Science
    2.      There will be mandatory course work
    3.      Opportunities for Job Shadows and Internships
    4.      College Connections
    5.      21st Century Skills Classes
    6.      Opportunity to earn College Credit and/or a Program CertificateIn a nutshell, students will have Real World Opportunities and Experiences.  Please attend the Parent Meeting on Tuesday, April 1st, 2014, in the West High School auditorium for more information.

    West High and Davenport Schools have been selected as one of only 6 Iowa cities to receive the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) BEST COMMUNITIES for Music Education Awards for 2014.  Congratulations to our music teachers, their students, and their families.

    West High Band Department Makes Some Noise!

    West’s Band Department competed in Orlando, Florida, over spring break. The Festival Concert Band received the Gold Award for a superior performance scoring a 91 from the three judges. The Jazz Band  also competed and received the Silver Award for an excellent performance. Mr. K. and Mrs. Oates are very proud of you for a job well done! Davenport West’s Jazz Band I attended State Jazz Contest on February 12, Coe College Jazz Summit on Friday, February 21, and SEIBA Jazz Festival on March 8.  Kelsey Gaylord,  alto sax player, was awarded an outstanding soloist award at SEIBA. The Jazz Band competed in a national competition in Orlando, Florida, on March 15.  They returned with 2nd place in their division.  Future performances include Jazz Extravaganza at the Red Stone Room on April 1, 7:30pm, featuring both Jazz Ensembles as well as playing for West’s Honors Awards on May 14.

    Army JROTC Wins “Best School Group” Trophy

    Army JROTC won the “BEST SCHOOL GROUP” Trophy in the St. Patrick’s Day parade. There were over 100 entries in the parade.  Way to go, guys!

    West High Senior Wins Brand Boeshaar Scholarship

    West High senior Emma Demarr has been awarded the prestigious Brand Boeshaar scholarship through the Figge Art Museum. The Brand Boeshaar Scholarship Program awards up to four scholarships annually to Iowa/Illinois area students who wish to earn a degree in Fine Art, Graphic Design, or Art Education at a college or university. The scholarship is awarded based on a student portfolio, transcript, and application. Each scholarship award is $3000 for the first academic year, with renewals for three subsequent years up to a total of $12,000.

    Emma has been accepted to both the College of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Pratt Institute’s School of Art & Design in New York. She is currently weighing both options.
