    West High Robotics Team Wins Again!

    Congratulations to the Iridium Falcons Robotics Team who won the Marion, Illinois, qualifier this past weekend! The Falcons were on the Winning Alliance and won the Control Award. Way to go, Mr. Roboto!  Click on the title to see the Robot.

    West High’s Universal Technical Institute Student Competition

    The car (Factory 5 Cobra Kit Car) was a UTI (Universal Technical Institute) student competition car made and designed by the students with minimal instructor contact time. The students rebuilt and modified the car to get as much horsepower and torque out of the vehicle with a five thousand dollar budget. UTI is a post-secondary educational institute that West High School students can attend to further their automotive knowledge. The school offers job placement and prepares students for a career as an automotive technician. Check out their website for the full line of post-secondary options.

    West’s Show Choir Shines

    West’s Prep Show Choir  earned 3rd runner-up in the Prep/Small School Division.  Congratulations, West Show Choir, on a great start to the competitive season!


    West Students Share “Best Female Soloist” Award

    Seniors Melanie and Dawn Vickers shared the award for “Best Female Soloist within a Show” among all the performing show choirs on January 18th at the Mt. Zion Show Choir Invitational.  West Connection, West’s varsity show choir, performed strong, earning them a spot in the  finals among some fierce competition,  earning  5th runner-up overall.

    West High’s Beak ‘n’ Eye Newsmagazine Wins Gallup Award Again

    The West High School Beak ‘n’ Eye newspaper staff was featured on the KWQC Channel 6 news on Jan. 20 for its award-winning program.  Pictured on the right are newspaper editors Jephthah Yarian and Corralle Whalen accepting the Gallup Award with Principal Mike Lawler on the left and Advisor Steve Lyle on the right.

    Reporter Fran Riley interviewed students about the topics they tackle and the digital technology they use to produce an all-color newsmagazine every month.

    The Beak ‘n’ Eye was one of 26 schools across the country that won the Gallup Award from Quill and Scroll for its superior work.  The Beak ‘n’ Eye has won this top honor every year since 1973.

    “It’s pretty amazing what these students can do,” newspaper adviser Steve Lyle said. “They make good decisions and write solid stories. I’m quite proud of them.  Fran Riley’s Video.
