English Learner Program
The Davenport Community School District English Learner Program provides two models for English Learners based on their English language learning needs.
- Our English as a Second Language (ESL) model uses techniques, methodology, and special curriculum designed to teach ELs explicitly about the English language, including the academic vocabulary needed to access content instruction, and to develop their English language proficiency in all four language domains (i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing).
- Our Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) model is designed to impart English language skills so that the ELs can transition and succeed in an English-only mainstream classroom once proficient.
Process to Identify English Language Learners
- All families with students enrolled in the Davenport School District complete a home language survey.
- When a language other than English is listed as the home language, and/or the child was born outside of the U.S., an ESL Coach administers an assessment to determine if ESL or SEI services are needed.
- After the assessment, the ESL Coach will determine the student’s level of English proficiency and discuss the English Learner model options with the family.
- Students who qualify for the ESL model will receive all ESL services at their home building.
- Students who qualify for the SEI model will be invited to attend at their closest building.
- K-6 SEI - Provided at all elementary locations through additional time and more intensity in the language acquisition instruction with an ESL Teacher.
- 7-8 SEI - Provided at Williams through specific courses taught by an ESL Teacher.
- 9-12 SEI - Provided at West through specific courses taught by an ESL Teacher.
