"What a school thinks about its library is a measure of what it thinks about education."

- Harold Howe, former Commissioner of Education

The mission of the library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information.

It’s amazing what an effect a mere 20 minutes a night can have on reading and writing skills!!

Reading/Technology Corner

March 14, 2008 -

Reading Corner from Mrs. Jahn: Recent staff development for Truman teachers has centered on the QAR strategy. QAR stands for Question Answer Relationship. The word “relationship” signifies the essence of this strategy – that questions and answers are connected or related to each other. In a very simple way, the words in a question are clues for readers about what information they need to look for as they go back to the text to answer a particular question. But QAR addresses a much deeper relationship. Research has shown that questioning (either from the teacher or the students themselves) strongly supports and advances students’ learning from reading. Researchers found that questions are effective because they:
  • give students a purpose for reading
  • focus attention on what they are to learn
  • help students to think actively as they read
  • encourage students to monitor their comprehension
  • help students review content
  • relate what they have learned to what they already know

The final and most important purpose for QAR is to teach students to become thoughtful and strategic readers. I will be telling you about the specifics of QAR in upcoming Trailblazer issues. Please look for this information as it will help you to support your child’s reading progress this year and through the summer months.

Reading Program

November 3, 2006 - Our new reading program includes quite a bit of rhyming word practice. This is helpful to primary students because they are able to build more vocabulary if they learn a whole group of words with the same vowel and ending sounds at one time. A website that reinforces this skill of rhyming is http://www.iknowthat.com. There are a lot of ads on this website, but once you get to the language arts section, students will find practice on rhyming words that is very complete and includes the pronunciation of the word and its use in a sentence. You do not have to register on this website to use it. Another website that the fourth and fifth graders have found interesting is about the United States map. It can be found at this address: http://bensguide.gpo.gov/flash/states_game2.html
