AVID at Sudlow
The Davenport Community School District adopted the AVID program over four years ago with JB Young as the leading school to implement the program. Sudlow has been an AVID school since the 2015-2016 school year and we are excited to start our second year. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is a nonprofit organization in which students are held accountable while being provided with academic and social support in order to succed in challenging courses such as Honors English Language Arts and/or Honors Math. The rigor in these courses will prepare students for the next level of learning and will also provide them with the skills necessary to do well on the ACT and SAT tests. With the research based strategies that are taught in AVID schools, students are prepared for college readiness and success. The following list is an overview of the driving force of AVID:
- Teaches skills and behaviors for academic success
- Provides intensive support with tutorials and strong student/teacher relationships
- Creates a positive peer group for students
- Develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination
