8TH
GRADE EXPLORE TESTING
The
Davenport
School District
administered EXPLORE to all 8th grade students. Explore
includes test in English, math, reading, and science; a career interest
survey; and questions about plans for high school and beyond. The results
of the Explore will help students build high school course plans and
introduce career options that are relevant to the student. It will show
areas where students need extra help or additional courses, suggestions
for improving skills, and careers that match interests. 8th
grade student will have an opportunity to discuss test results with school
counselors and teachers. The test results will be send home
for the student and parents/guardians to keep. Parents/Guardians
will be invited to an informational meeting in the near future to discuss
the Explore and testing results
8TH
GRADE ACADEMIC/ CAREER
PLAN
It
is an Iowa Department of Education requirement that all 8th
grade students in Iowa
use the web based program www.ihaveaplaniowa.gov
to complete their academic/career plan. Your student will
complete the 8th grade “Guideway”, a six step process that
guides students through a series of interest surveys that help your
student learn more about what types of careers they might be best suited.
This web based program provides a wealth of information on the world of
work, educational preparation, and life planning. Your student will create
a portfolio that they can access from any computer with internet access.
Please ask your child to show you their portfolio and discuss their
academic/career plan with them. If you do not have internet access,
please consider using your public library or ask to use a computer where
your student attends school. Your involvement is critical to support
your child in achieving their goals.
The Department of Education also requires that a parent/guardian review
and approve the academic/career plan. Students may
change their mind at any time on their academic/career plan – that is
natural and expected.
If
you have additional questions please contact the counselors Kim Bohannon
or Diane Mathurin at 323-1837.
