As way to honor those in the community who make a special contribution toward keeping the blues alive and educating audiences on blues music, the Mississippi Valley Blues Society’s education committee created and presented its first annual Excellence in Blues Education award. This special award was presented to Madison’s Elementary School music teacher Mary Hyslop on November 9. Hereafter, the special community award will officially be named The Mary Hyslop Excellence in Blues Education award.

“Ms. Hyslop is a community leader,” says MVBS member and local blues musician Hal Reed, who presented the award. “Very quietly and behind the scenes, she goes above and beyond the call of duty in educating her kids about blues music and in helping to keep the blues alive.”
Stephen Verdon, Business Education teacher at Davenport West High School, Davenport, has been named 2007 Financial Educator of the Year by Iowa Jump$tart Coalition. The award is presented annually at Jump$tart’s personal finance conference held July 19-20.
Lori Kimmel, a teacher at Fillmore Elementary, was recently recognized with an Office Max Award for her teaching efforts. This is a first time award for Office Max and they are doing it nation-wide. The award was presented during a special ceremony at the school in October. Lori is the recipient of this area of Iowa which includes to Cedar Rapids and this area of the Quad Cities—including Bettendorf and PV. She was selected out of around 1000 teachers whose names were submitted for her efforts at helping kids succeed. (Lori is in the center of the back row.)
The Kimberly Center was very fortunate to obtain contributions from the Kiwanis Club and the Optimist Club to purchase professional quality weight equipment for the school's PE department. The generous donations were used to purchase 11 high quality weight machines, 5 commercial grade cardiovascular machines in addition to many other miscellaneous pieces of equipment needed to complete the school's weight room. The project was the brainchild of School Psychologist Terry Canright who had a vision many years ago of Kimberly Center's students being able to work-out and reap the benefits of weight-training and cardiovascular exercise.
David Houk, art teacher at Monroe Elementary, is the illustrator of a newly published children's book called Willie's Wagon. The book was written by local television news anchor, Gary Metivier, who is also the parent of two boys who attend the Davenport Community Schools. The book should be released for local distribution some time in October 2007.
