Public Discussion on School Start Dates & High School Schedule

The Davenport Community School District will hold two Public Discussions on the topics of school start dates and the high school schedule. The Public Discussions will  be held:

  • Thursday, November 14 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the North High School auditorium
  • Monday, November 18 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the West High School auditorium

According to State statute, Iowa schools are supposed to start classes in the week that includes September 1, however school districts are able to apply to the Iowa Department of Education for a waiver to allow an earlier start date for the school year. Davenport Community Schools have applied for this waiver annually, along with most of the other school districts in Iowa. A brief outline of the issue is provided below.

The second topic discussed will be the pros and cons of block scheduling and the traditional schedule for our high schools. Our high schools are currently using the block schedule, however it is important that we review our high school schedule with a public discussion  to determine if we are doing what’s best for our schools.

Please take a few minutes to review the information on each topic that is provided below.  We hope you’ll be able to attend one of our upcoming discussions.
