Principal's Message

Welcome to North High School where an innovative staff has high academic standards for our diverse student body. North has implemented a 9th Grade Academy to better transition students to high school and Project Lead the Way, a pre-engineering program, to prepare students for exciting post secondary careers. North guides students' choices to better prepare graduates for post secondary opportunities. North students participate in a host of experiences among which are our award winning MCJROTC, athletics, and fine arts programs. North was honored by the Iowa Department of Education as a "model school" for high school reform. North staff has been presenters at numerous local, state and national conferences showcasing initiatives underway at North. As a "Fine" recognized high school, North prides itself on being on the cutting edge as it strives to meet our students' needs. North High continues to be a community focal point with ready access to the Holzworth Performing Arts Center and the North Family YMCA.

 
HISTORY

North High School was established in 1985 in a building that was formerly Wood Junior High.  In the fall of 1994, 9th graders were added to our building.  In January of 1997, a new gymnasium was completed along with a Classroom of the Future and an ICN room. In the year 2001, a new cafeteria and a new auditorium were completed.

 
VISION

The North High Community supports a safe, fully equipped facility in an environment which ensures a diversified educational program that prepares all students for the life challenges of the 21st Century.

 
MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of North High School is to embrace and challenge a diverse community of students who will become life-long learners with high expectations in a safe and positive environment.

To this end North High School will provide:

Traditional academic/college preparatory courses as well as vocational career preparation to provide students with basic and technical skills necessary in an ever changing environment.

Extra and co-curricular activities to enable students to have the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, and socially.  An environment which encourages individual responsibility and nurtures positive self concept  in order to provide students with an opportunity to succeed.  Accountability to our community by providing quality programs, excellent role models and high learning expectations.

 
BLOCK SCHEDULING

North High School's block schedule consists of the following:

  • 9-week terms with 4 terms per year
  • each term is a "grading period"
  • classes meet everyday for 90 minutes
