  • North Taco Club has Visiting Chef

North High Taco Club members were treated to the culinary expertise of Juan Garcia, owner of Los Compadres Taco Shop in Downtown Davenport.  Mr. Garcia shared his secret to making a simple yet delicious pico de gallo and then described what Mexican cuisine was to him as students ate.  He joked about perceptions of Mexican food outside of Mexico, “I had never heard of a chimichanga or hard shell tacos before coming to the United States.”  Mr. Garcia went on to describe dishes like mole and pozole and compared being a chef to a DJ: “Just like a DJ picks the right songs and makes people happy, a chef picks the right ingredients and makes people happy.”  Taco Club meets every other week at North as enrichment during RTI.  The goal is to teach students about Mexican cuisine and culture and broaden their idea of what Mexican food is and can be.
