Rescue and Therapy Dogs
By Miss Ceurvorst

Dogs have long been faithful companions to humans, but there are some extraordinary canines with unique skills and superior work ethics that go above and beyond their traditional roles as pets.  These are the hero dogs.  From bomb-sniffing dogs and contraband dogs to guide dogs, therapy dogs, and search and rescue dogs, these specially trained canines play an important part in the lives of many.  On a daily basis, whether we realize it or not, these devoted animals are here to assist, protect, comfort, and, in many cases, rescue us.

A recent weekly reading theme for Monroe School ’s fifth grade students was Rescue Dogs.  Through our new Treasures reading program, we read about Sparky an in-home companion therapy dog, Sam a library Read to Me therapy dog, and Fred a Wag Brigade therapy dog who visits hospitals and retirement homes.

Our culminating activity for the week was a classroom presentation by Mr. Saelens, Monroe ’s school psychologist, and a visit from B.J., Mr. Saelens’ therapy dog.  We learned about B.J.’s background, training, and work as a therapy dog.  Mr. Saelens, knowing how dogs build our self-esteem, permitted every fifth grader to pet and talk to B.J. “Will you be back tomorrow?” the students asked. If rescue dogs and therapy dogs only knew what a difference they make.
