Bald Eagle Days 2007

by Miss Ceurvorst

Monroe School’s fifth grade students experienced a close encounter with several amazing birds of prey during our January 5 study trip to Bald Eagle Days at the QCCA Expo Center.  Roger Holloway, a professional bird expert from the World Bird Sanctuary used live birds as his learning tools when he taught us the characteristics of eagles, how this species made its comeback, and what problems still exist.  In addition to introducing  three different species of eagles, Mr. Holloway also showed us a red-tailed hawk and a vulture.  The vulture was even allowed to fly over the audience several times---just inches above our heads.  Following the indoor presentation, we traveled to an area south of Sunset Marina in Rock Island to view the bald eagles in their natural habitat along the Mississippi River.  Using spotting scopes, we saw several bald eagles roosting in the trees.  Bald Eagle Days presents students with additional knowledge and contacts as they continue to make a difference in our world through environmental education.
