McKinley Farm to School
Overview: Farm to school encourages and supports nutrition and agriculture education through taste tests, our school garden and farm tours. Such experiences help children understand where their food comes from and how their good choices affect their bodies, environment, and community.
Farm to School History: McKinley Elementary has been part of the Farm to School program for two years. Last year, Farm to School parents helped construct five raised garden beds. Students participate in a veggie vote every spring to decide what will be planted in the garden. In fall, students harvest the vegetables, participate in cooking lessons with a local chef and integrate these experiences into their language arts, science and math curriculum.
McKinley students have recently completed an activity harvesting vegetables. You can read more here, courtesy of the Quad City Times.
