    Hello McKinley Families,

December is upon us and we have many fun activities and field trips that take place during this time.  Our 3rd graders along with all of DCSD 3rd graders took a field trip today to the ballet where they watch “The Nutcracker.”  Our 5th graders will be spending the day at the Junior Achievement Center completing “Biztown” on December 18th.  This is an awesome experience that the 5th graders have been working to prepare for during Social Studies class.  I hope everyone has a great weekend!

    Dance Marathon

McKinley Dance Marathon – Fundraiser for University of Iowa Steadfast Children’s Hospital.  Friday, December 7th 5-7pm.  Admission is $5 and includes: Dancing, Face Painting, Card Making Station, Games, Bake Sale and Silent Auction and Water.  Dance Marathon Bracelets will go on sale for $2 starting the week of November 26th during lunch until gone.

4th Grade Music Performance and Orchestra/Band Performance (TIME CHANGE) 5:30pm Start Time

We will be having our McKinley Orchestra and Band Perform followed by the 4th grade music performance on Monday, December 17th at 5:30pm in the auditorium.  I highly encourage all 4th grade students to come and participate as well as all band and orchestra students.  We are aware that there is another district performance that starts at 7pm and will ensure that our student’s performances will be completed in time for everyone to attend both events.

    Angel Tree

McKinley is once again having our Angel tree.  We currently have 10 Angels remaining.  Please help spread the cheer for some of our McKinley families in need of some help during the Holiday Season.

    Music Recorders Available for Purchase

3rd, 4th, and 5th graders need to bring their recorders to school.  Recorders are available to purchase in the office for $5.50.  There will be a handful of recorders that are available for students to borrow instead of purchase.  There will be assignments in the recorder packets for students to practice at home.

    Biztown

McKinley Elementary 5th Graders are hard at work preparing for the upcoming JA Biztown trip. We are learning how to write checks, fill out deposit tickets and apply for jobs.

Along with all of that work we are so excited to have the opportunity to go! Mayor elections have taken place and we have all applied for jobs. The mayor of Biztown is Jazzlyn Jacques.

    AR Reading

So this year, as you already know, we’re doing a reading program called Accelerated Reader or AR.  It’s an online program where you take a quiz on a book you’ve recently read. If you get the questions right, you get points which could lead to getting cool prizes. You get a ticket for every 5 points earned. For example, if you get 5 points you get 1 ticket, if you have 60 points you get 12 tickets. When you receive your ticket, you fill out your first and last name and your grade. Once it’s all filled out, you take the ticket down to the library and put in the box labeled “AR tickets”. Names are drawn every Friday for prizes.
