Reading / Writing Connection
McKinley Elementary teachers have spent two semesters studying strategies and creating grade level expectations to ensure our students become competent writers. The building leadership team and grade level teams created grade level specific expectations for writing called McKinley Writing Roadmaps. The roadmaps give students a very clear outline of what they should be able to master by the end of the school year. The roadmaps have also allowed teachers to collaborate in grade level teams on student feedback for writing and ensures classroom expectations are the same at each grade level.
We know that writing is an essential skill that will benefit students for the rest of their life and that by introducing and practicing writing with engaging activities will create confident writers and learners. With this intentional focus on producing competent writers we have seen huge gains in student performance. We are proud of the work that students have done already and look forward to continue growth in the writing of our students at McKinley Elementary School.
