Grade 5 Conflict Project
2
Project Goals
  • To create a research report on an aspect of conflict, using the examples of the Civil War and the Holocaust / WW II
  • To effectively use the Pathways process to gather and share information.
  • To thoughtfully consider the role that conflict plays in our lives.
3
Description
  • The paper must be between 3-5 pages.
  • The paper must show evidence of an introduction, body,  and conclusion (ie. What can we do today to avoid the conflict you studied and wrote about?)
4
Procedures
  • We will be doing several things in preparing for the project. In Social studies, you will be learning about the time period of the Civil War and World War II.
  • In Language, you will be learning about note taking, and you will also hear two stories about children who lived during those time frames.
  • In the library, you will be also listening to the stories, and learning some information about the Pathways process, note taking and a lot more!
5
Using the Pathways process
  • There are 6 steps to the Pathways process: Appreciation, Presearch, Search, Interpretation, Communication, and Evaluation. We will learn about each of these, and you will be responsible for recognizing the purpose of each of the steps.
  •  As you work on your report, you will find that you will go back and forth many times between steps, and will do revisions of your paper.
6
Technology
  • What are you going to be required to be able to do using the computer?
  •  You will be required to use one book from either the Lincoln Library or the Davenport Public Library. The Online catalogs can be found at
  • http://webopac.davenportschools.org/webopac/main?siteid=linimc
  • http://www.davenportpubliclibrary.com/ - click on the link for library catalog.
7
Technology (cont.)
  • You will be required to use a resource from the subscription databases that Lincoln subscribes to. You can find the link at:
8
Technology (cont.)
  • Depending on the need, you may wish to consult a web site outside the subscription databases. Please talk to Mr. Harrison, Mrs. Jacque, Mrs. Barry, or Mr. Macksey for suggestions on conducting your web search. DO NOT simply conduct a Google or ask.com search.
9
Note taking
  • You will be required to take notes from books, magazines, and web resources, as well as viewing or hearing original source documents. Some good place to learn about note taking are:
  • http://www.crlsresearchguide.org/12_Making_Note_Cards.asp
10
Works Cited Page
  • At the end of every research paper, the author of the paper submits a list of resources that he or she used to complete the paper. Some of the resources might be used to take notes, and some may not. For the resources that are used for notes in preparing, the paper, a works cited page is required.
11
Works Cited page (cont.)
  • An excellent “How to” can be found at the web site http://www.openc.k12.or.us/citeintro/elementary/howtotips.html
  • We will be studying this site in depth for this unit.
  • The Citation maker makes the work of citing your resources much faster and easier. We will be looking at this resource as well.
12
Schedule
  • Here is the timeline for your project
13
Current Status
  • We will be taking a field trip to the library in December before winter break.
  • Be attentive to the topics that may interest you on either the Civil War or the Holocaust. You may wish to check out books to begin your process or check an encyclopedia
