John Solbrig, West High Class of 2012
Industrial Designer, Sears Seating, Davenport

John’s high school field of study: Engineering Design

His career field: At Sears Seating, I focus on the comfort of the seats as well as the ergonomics so they fit the human form. I begin my designs with hand sketches that get transferred to the computer, and ultimately they are turned into production seats for agricultural equipment, semi-trucks, fork lifts, and other material handling equipment. My favorite part of the job is that I have a lot of creative freedom. The seats are my vision, and seeing them come to life is rewarding.

His Davenport Community Schools advantage: My freshman year at Iowa State University was spent building a portfolio to apply to the industrial design program, and I was one of only 36 students accepted into the program. The Project Lead the Way classes at West built a competitive but friendly learning environment that prepared me for the competitive nature in college and eventually in this career field.
