J.B. Young Opportunity Center

The J.B. Young Opportunity Center concept was created following the closure of J.B. Young as a K-8 school with the end of the 2015-2016 school year. The Davenport Community Schools decided to use the first floor of the facility to house services that would create an asset for the neighborhood

In order to learn about the types of services and opportunities that would best serve families who live in the neighborhood, the Davenport Community Schools asked for feedback from a various groups of people including neighborhood residents, students who had attended J. B. Young School, and Hilltop Business owners. The results of those conversations were reviewed and there were many similarities in the services requested by the different groups. Some of those desires included a teen center, a preschool, use the gym for basketball and other team sports, and homework help for studies, to name a few.

The district sent out Requests for Proposal (RFPs) to a range of organizations who would be able to provide the needs mentioned and perhaps others as well. Superintendent Tate then asked for neighborhood volunteers to serve on a committee to review the RFPs and identify those organizations that they believed would best meet the needs of the neighborhood residents.

Nine organizations or programs were selected to become the tenants of the J.B. Young Opportunity Center (1st floor of the building). Organizations include:

The renovations for common spaces on the first floor of the building began in 2016-2017 and are ongoing. Work has also begun on the parking and green space that will be located on the north side of the building.
