ALL SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES
This school year the school faculty will host a monthly all-school Lifeskills Assembly to highlight our lifeskills and encourage the kids to use them. Each child will receive a pencil with the Lifeskill of that month on it to help them remember it all month. We will recognize accomplishments in whole classes. For example, the third grade class may have turned in their homework 90% of the time or the kindergarten may have learned to recognize 10 new letters, or the fifth grade may have organized a charity event, etc.
In addition, we will perform a song, say the pledge and see a short presentation about the Lifeskills. These assemblies will last approximately 15 minutes at the start of the day. It is a short amount of time but will focus on the very positive behaviors that Garfield Gators do.
In addition to the Lifeskills, a focus of our All School Assemblies is bully prevention. More information on this is coming soon. Click here to visit the "Stop Bullying Now" website.

Tab collecting has been an annual project at Garfield for many years. During that time we have gathered over one million two hundred thousand tabs! Along with many other schools, organizations, and individuals, the Kaaba Shrine has been able to donate over $90,000.00 to Shriners Hospitals for Children. All that from those tiny tabs! Thank you all for caring and making this project a success! Continue to collect your tabs all summer and send them to school with your child in the fall.

What is Read With Me?
It is a one hour program sponsored by the Scott County Empowerment board to help all children from birth to 5 years old develop their kindergarten readiness skills and become familiar with their future elementary school building.
Who's invited to Read With Me?
Anyone with a child from 0 to 5 years old is welcome to the Garfield Media Center every Tuesday from 2:30 - 3:30 pm )check the updated calendar for dates). If you have a child at Garfield, they are welcome to join us after school has dismissed. If you know a friend who has a preschooler -- invite them to come. Even if you do daycare and need an extra activity or field trip for your little ones -- PLEASE COME!
What goes on during Read with Me?
We usually open with a few songs, rhymes or games. We read a story, do a craft (lots of coloring cutting and gluing) and have a snack. Parents are encouraged to join in. But most importantly, you have access to Garfield's Media Center. Each child may check out several books. There are parental resources as well. Many of the books, especially the board books are available due to a grant from the Scott County Empowerment Board.
If you have any questions regarding the Read with Me program, contact the Garfield Media Center during school hours.

There are seven Lifeskills that are taught and used at Garfield School. In September, we introduce ALL of the seven Lifeskills. These Lifeskills help us to become lifelong learners. In the months that follow, we concentrate on the importance of each and every skill. And in May, we review all that we have learned.
