  • DSF Scholarships Total Over $95,000 in Awards

    The Davenport Schools Foundation has awarded and coordinated $80,500 in scholarships, which will be presented to 36 graduating seniors from Central, North , West and Mid City high schools, according to DSF President John Korn. In addition, over $17,000 will be given to previous winners who won multi-year awards such as the Hanae Fujiwara Wiese, Kathryn Bell Tate, and Jane Grady Scholarships.

    DSF Scholarship Committee co-chairs Manny Fritz and Sherry Freese led a team of volunteers who reviewed hundreds of applications for the scholarships ranging in amount from $300 to $14,000.

    The winners and their parents will be introduced to the Davenport School Board members on Monday, May 23, at 6 p.m. in the Hester Board Room (third floor) of the ASC.

    The 2016 Davenport Schools Foundation Scholarship Recipients are:

    Emily Tonn of Central High School won the Kathryn Bell Tate Scholarship ($14,000 over four years). Emily was also the recipient of a CHS Hall of Honor Scholarship ($1,500). Her parents are Anthony and Julie Tonn of Davenport. Emily will attend Iowa State University in the fall.

    Collin Bell of West High School was awarded the Jan Mutum Educator Opportunity Scholarship ($10,000 over four years.) This is the first year for the Jan Mutum Scholarship. Collin is also the recipient of the Jack King Music Scholarship ($1,500). Collin is the son of Kim Bell of Davenport. He plans to attend Iowa State University.

    Katherine Axel of Central won the Jane Grady Scholarship ($5,000 over four years). She was also awarded the Helen Pohling Scholarship ($1,200) and a CHS Hall of Honor Scholarship ($1,500). Her parents are John and Elizabeth Axel of Davenport. She will be a student at the University of Pennsylvania this fall.

    Margaret Carr of Central won a Hanae Fujiwara Wiese Memorial Scholarship for music ($4,000 over four years). Her parents are William and Mia Carr of Davenport. Margaret will be a student at Colorado State University in the fall.

    Nicholas Fahrenkrug was also awarded a Hanae Fujiwara Wiese Scholarship ($4,000 over four years). His parents are Tom and Theresa Fahrenkrug of Davenport. He plans to study at Lawrence Conservatory of Music.

    Dayna Tanner of Central was awarded the Joan Kohlberg-Lowen Scholarship ($4,000 split between two semesters). Her parents are Michael and Lisa Tanner of Davenport. Dayna will be a student at Purdue University this fall.

    Alicia Luebbe of North won a Helen G. Pohling Scholarship ($1,200). She is the daughter of David and Rachel Luebbe of Davenport. Alicia plans to attend Missouri University of Science and Technology in the fall.

    Evan Snawerdt of West won a Helen G. Pohling Scholarship ($1,200). He is the son of Jim and Sharon Snawerdt of Blue Grass. He plans to attend Iowa State University.

    Benjamin Grenier of Central was awarded the CHS Class of 1964 Future Educator Scholarship ($2,000). In addition, he won the CHS Hall of Honor Scholarship –Keith Jurgens Memorial Award ($1,500). His parents are Don and Heather Grenier of Davenport. He will be a student at Rockford University in the fall.

    Andrea Figg of North won the Mary Means Memorial Scholarship ($2,000). She was also awarded a Caryl Haring Memorial Scholarship ($750). Her parents are Dean and Lynn Figg of Wilton. Andrea will study at Scott Community College.

    Duane Sleet is the recipient of a Jerry Jurgens Memorial Scholarship ($1,500). His mother is Raslyn Sleet of Davenport. He will attend Illinois State University in the fall.

    Shelby Thede of Central was also awarded a Jerry Jurgens Memorial Scholarship ($1,500). She is the daughter of Glen and Debbie Thede of Davenport. She plans to attend either Loras College or Black Hawk College.

    Joaquin Bueno Diaz of West won the Davenport Schools Foundation Scholarship ($1,000). His parents are Alejandro and Guadalupe Bueno of Davenport. He will study at the University of Iowa in the fall.

    Gabriel Behrendt from Central was awarded the Class of 1959 Scholarship ($1,000). His parents are John and Ann Behrendt of Davenport. Gabriel will attend the University of Iowa in the fall.

    Erin Schaffer of Central was awarded the Marie Linke Powell Scholarship ($1,000). Her mother is Robin Schaffer of Davenport. She will attend Iowa State University.

    Keaton Rommel of West won the Brian Keppy Memorial Scholarship ($1,500). His parents are Kevin and Tracy Rommel of Davenport. He will attend Southwest Minnesota State.

    Amiah Gooding of Central won the Lisa Arbisser Scholarship ($500).  In addition, she was awarded the CHS Hall of Honor – Jim Hester Memorial Scholarship ($1,500). Her parents are Virgil and Virginia Gooding of Davenport. She plans to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign in the fall.

    Lorraine Periera of Central won a CHS Hall of Honor – Kneipp Family Scholarship ($1,500). Her parents are Meriner and Susan Periera of Davenport. She will be a student at University of California, Berkley in the fall.

    Aaliyah Lopez of Central won a CHS Hall of Honor – Meyer Memorial Scholarship ($1,500). Her mother is Angela Lacy of Davenport. She plans to attend Loyola University.

    Thompson Teasdale of Central is the recipient of a CHS Hall of Honor Scholarship ($1,500). His parents are Scott and Cynthia Teasdale. He plans to attend Grinnell College.

    Hannah Hansen of Central is the recipient of a CHS Hall of Honor Scholarship ($1,500). Her parents are Matt and Jayme Hansen of Davenport. She will be a student at Drake University in the fall.

    Claire Trimble of Central was the recipient of the Buttleman-Malcomb/Arbisser Journalism Scholarship ($1,000). She is the daughter of Matthew and Andrea Trimble of Davenport. Claire plans to study at Dominican University in River Forest, IL.

    Maggie Warner of North won the North High Music Scholarship ($1,000).   She is the daughter of Terry and Michelle Warner of Davenport, and plans to attend Concordia University.

    Blaine Schmidt of West won the West High Music Scholarship ($1,000). He is the son of Mark and Michelle Schmidt of Blue Grass, and plans to attend the University of Iowa.

    Nathan Dunahoo of Mid City won a Betty Nelson Technical Scholarship ($600). His mother is Tina Dunahoo of Davenport. He will attend Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny.

    Andrew Nelson of Mid City won a Betty Nelson Technical Scholarship ($600). His mother is Rebecca Lamphier of Davenport. He will attend Hamilton Technical College.

    Brockton Frank of West won a Betty Nelson Technical Scholarship ($600). He is also the recipient of the George E. Weis Career Technical Scholarship ($500). His mother is Penny Knock of Blue Grass. He will attend Eastern Iowa Community College.

    Becca Frederick of Central won a DSF Future Educator Scholarship ($500). Her parents are Christine and James Frederick III of Davenport. She plans to study at the University of Iowa.

    Korben Wilson of Central was awarded a DSF Future Educator Scholarship ($500). His parents are Nick and Linda Wilson of Davenport. He plans to attend VanderCook College of Music.

    Sophia Peña of West won a DSF Future Educator Scholarship ($500). She is the daughter of John and Heather Peña of Davenport. She plans to attend Black Hawk College.

    Rylie Niebuhr of Central won a MidWestOne “You’re the One” Scholarship ($500) to study business. She is the daughter of Rory and Heather Niebuhr of Davenport. Rylie will be a student at the University of Iowa.

    Isabella Volfson from Central was also awarded a MidWestOne “You’re the One” Scholarship ($500). Her mother is Ilya Volfson of Bettendorf. She will study at the University of California, San Diego in the fall.

    Anna Black of North won a Caryl Haring Scholarship ($750). Her parents are Mike and Lori Black of Bettendorf. She will attend Black Hawk College.

    Jonathan Shaw of West won a Caryl Haring Scholarship ($500). His parents are Daniel and Christina Shaw of Blue Grass. He plans to attend the University of Northern Iowa.

    James Heinrichs is a recipient of a Brad Peck Memorial Scholarship ($300). His parents are Joseph and Erica Heinrichs of Davenport. He plans to attend Iowa State University.

    John Ward of West was also awarded a Brad Peck Memorial Scholarship ($300). His mother is Kris Ward. He plans to attend the University of Iowa.
