School Library & Destiny Library Catalog
The library is a busy place. We work hard to teach the love of reading, the responsibility of returning borrowed items, and learn technology skills. We currently have 12,788 titles and 21,436 titles with an approximate ratio of 50% fiction and 50% nonfiction items. Our literacy library, with 8,000 plus books and items, area has sets of 6 or more books for teacher use labeled by reading level for instructional purposes. Each month over 2000 books are checked out by staff and students! We see students on a weekly basis for library lessons that integrate with the classroom, the Iowa Core, and the AASL library standards. We work hard to help students find books that not only interest them but also find a book that is a “good fit” meaning able to be read alone without assistance. We participate in the Iowa Children’s Choice Award and Goldfinch Award voting to push quality literature chosen by children for children.
Technology is a large part of our culture. We work hard to teach strategies on how to find information effectively and efficiently. When these skills and other aspects of technology are an important part of instruction, we collaborate to teach the skills of citing a source, using an image for a project, ethical issues, searching for information on a database verses the free internet, how to use an advanced search, and more. Online books and databases are certainly here to stay. Please visit www.iowaaeaonline.org to look at our various paid databases with research tools, technology tutorials, online books and more. We are more than willing to share the login and password information through a Fillmore student! Bookflix & Trueflix are two of the online book subscriptions we have through Iowa AEA Online. Our AEA has added 300 e-books for student use. Please visit www.aea9.k12.ia.us , click on student resources, and click on Mackin products. These books are NOT read aloud to the students. It is just like checking out the paper copy. The login and password is the same as the Iowa AEA Online products!
Destiny Library Catalog
The Destiny Library system improves access to library and curriculum materials (which has been proven to be one of the factors that raises test scores and student learning), provides students access from any computer at school, home or other location having an internet connection, and also makes it easier for students to find materials at their reading level via the Lexile score feature.
