West High School Honors Students

On Wednesday, May 15th the leaders, faculty and families of West High School celebrated the tremendous success of their students. The ceremony featured honors for academic achievement and recent scholarship announcements, including the following award winners! Tracy Vo received a very distinguished award, a Gates Millennium Scholarship award, which will pay for her entire undergraduate degree. Each year only 1,000 Gates scholars are selected nationwide, and Tracy was the ONLY recipient in the entire state of Iowa this year.

Other awards included: Greg Arp Memorial Scholarship awards to Sydney Buckles, Kristopher Burney, Tyler Lightner, Laren Skulte, Brittany Pernell and Ashley VanWinkle. The Jack Hudson Testimonial Scholarship went to to Freya Greene for her outstanding performance in science classes. Davenport Schools Foundation awards included the Johnson School Scholarship to Sydney Buckles and Rachel Wince; the Brad Peck Memorial Scholarship to Kristopher Burnery; the Pohling and Davenport Schools Future Educator Scholarship to Shelby Tracy; the Class of ’59 and Johnson School scholarships to Clara Loter; and the DSF Scholarship to Jamesia Johnson. Other recognees included two Betty Nelson Career Technical scholarships to Tyler Lightner and Justin Bailey.

Davenport Central High Students Hit New York!

Central students enjoyed an exciting visit to New York City this week. The trip included an extraordinary opportunity to have a personalized performance workshop with the cast of “Wicked” and Broadway star Tim Shew. Other stops on the city included the “Today Show,” NBC studios, Museum of National History, and other sightseeing favorites. Sheri Womack Receives Award from Iowa Association for Alternative Education

Daphne Cornish Awarded the Student of Integrity Award

Daphne Cornish, a Central High School senior, is one of three recipients of the Quad Cities Better Business Bureau’s Student of Integrity awards for 2013. Cornish stood out from a field of 29 nominees due, in part, to her commitment and passion for environmental activism when she acted on that passion to enlist the support of her classmates to participate in a nationwide competition called the “Recycle Bowl.” The competition resulted in more than 20,000 pounds of recyclable items being collected. This is only one of many projects where Cornish has invested her time and talents to have a positive impact on her school and her community. The award includes a $2,500 scholarship to the college or university of her choice.

Davenport Students Win at Invent Iowa!

Three Davenport students, Calvin Moulton of Madison and Zeke Wynsma and Calvin Jantzi, both of Eisenhower made it through three rounds of competition to get to the state finals in Invent Iowa. Parent leaders and the Talented And Gifted teacher from the two schools, Lorie Brock, met with students after school to research, design and execute the two projects. Calvin and Zeke’s project won at the state level earning the boys a $500 scholarship to University of Iowa or Iowa State engineering department. Their project is a sealed toilet seat to keep bacteria from spreading. Calvin Jantzi invented “The One Trip”-a device that connects to garbage cans that holds recycling bins. Scott County YMCA Honors District and West High Student!

The Scott County YMCA’s Annual Awards Celebration honored Davenport Community Schools leadership. The event honored the many levels of partnership between the Davenport Community Schools and the Scott County YMCA. Community Leaders Celebrate Stepping Stones Collaboration

Leaders of the Davenport Community Schools, City of Davenport and ISU Extension and Outreach visited the Monroe Elementary Stepping Stones program on Tuesday, May 15th. Leaders toured the program and met in a planning session for the collaboration. Begun in 1999 the partnership has grown to serve every public elementary school in Davenport, Blue Grass and Buffalo with low or no cost after school and summer enrichment programming. The partnership has become a national and even international model, recently hosting a delegation from Chile visiting on the North Scott Rotary International Exchange program. Program leaders have also visited Haiti to support revitalization efforts and train Haitian educators on the after school and summer enrichment model.

Davenport Student Records Going Paperless

It’s been a 12-year project to make all student records electronic, however on May 10, 2013, approximately 16,500 student paper files were shredded. Linda Zurborg, Records Department, has spearheaded these efforts to convert all student records to electronic files that can be accessed through the district’s internal computer system. The district’s Learning Information Services department helped with the transition to ensure the security of the records.

In addition to savings on paper, toner, and staff time, student records can now be accessed quickly when students change schools within the district or move to another district which helps ease the student’s transition to a new school. Certified hard copies of records can be obtained when necessary.

Student records for the Davenport Community Schools date back to 1865.

CHS Student Selected for National Honor

Josh Byrne, a Central High School senior, has won a Silver Medal at the 2013 National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. His submission, “Raptorial Arms,” consisted of various drawings of the legs of a praying mantis and other insects. Byrne says he “would like to do for insects what John James Audubon did for birds.” He appreciates the ease with which insects can be studied. “I love the way they look,” said Byrne. “They were made for art.”

Currently, wire is one of his favorite mediums and he has done wire scuptures of insects and wildlife ranging from a couple of inches long to a velociraptor made of aluminum, copper and black copper which is 6′ wide by 3′ tall. In the photo, he is working on an eagle made from aluminum can pop tops and wire. The velociraptor, along with many more works by Byrne, is on display at Quad City Arts in Rock Island.

This year 230,000 works of art and writing were submitted to be judged by a panel of artistic and literary professionals. Only the top 1% of students who submitted their work received an award. Winners are being recognized at an award ceremony on May 31, 2013 at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Byrne will be unable to attend the awards ceremony.
