WEST HIGH BUSINESS ACADEMY STUDENTS
EARN PRESIDENTIAL VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARDS FOR
COMMUNITY SERVICE
The 80 members of Steve Verdon’s Business Academy
Class at West High School will receive a
Presidential Volunteer Service Award – along with 15
students from the class who are also earning
individual medals – tomorrow (May 23) at
approximately 9:15 a.m. in the Library Media Center
at West High. The medals will be presented by Iowa
state senator, Frank Woods.
Altogether, the combined class and the individual
students have provided more than 3800 hours of
community service through a wide variety of projects
during the academic year. Students made visits to
the Good Samaritan Care Center, helped with movie
nights at Wilson Elementary, recycled newspapers,
provided peer counseling for intermediate students,
took part in the Student Hunger Drive and other
local food drives, read to Wilson Elementary
students on a regular basis, were active in Boy
Scouts, participated in 4H and church activities,
and many other projects.
The entire class will receive a Gold medal for
their more than 1000+ volunteer hours. The following
students will receive medals for their individual
efforts:

- Becky Brus – Silver
- Breanne Bovee - Gold
- Jessica Ingles – Bronze
- Natasha Byers - Gold
- Lacey Alley – Bronze
- Reid McMahon - Gold
- Mark Peters – Bronze
- Tricia Braun - Gold
- Nick Augustine – Bronze
The following West High Staff will receive medals
for their individual efforts:
- Deborah Hall – Bronze
- Steve Verdon - Silver
- Jack Achs – Bronze
- Sue Lank-Voyles – Bronze
