Description of Group:
The Iowa Bar Association sponsors Mock Trial in Iowa. In a mock trial, students play the roles of attorneys and witnesses as they prepare and present both sides of a hypothetical legal problem. Participants are given a hands-on opportunity to examine the legal process and current legal issues. Students study trial techniques and procedures. Mock trials also help students develop important critical thinking skills and aid in the development of fundamental research, preparation, and presentation skills. Teams are composed of 8-10 students.
Time Commitment Required:
Teams begin meeting during December once the case is released. The time commitment in December is fairly light most teams only meet once or twice during this month. Teams usually meet once a week during the month of January and more often during the month of February. Meetings can occur most often at the attorney coaches offices. Meeting times vary depending on the team members. Competition occurs at the beginning of March. State competition is usually held at the end of March.
