     Attention Seniors ~ the Davenport Central Hall of Honor Scholarship applications are now available!  The Hall of Honor awards a minimum of 5 scholarships every year to Central students based on a variety of criteria.  You can find application information on the Central website or pick up a paper copy in the Counseling and Student Services Center.  If you have any questions, please see Mr. Flynn.

    Attention Parents of Senior Students: Now is the time to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  If you are college bound next year but haven’t done so yet; we are here to help!  On Friday, January 26th, Lupe Hernandez from the Iowa College Aid Network will be here to assist you.  All you need to do is bring your 2016 tax documents!  Call the Counseling Office at 323-1756 and make an appointment with Mrs. Valenzuela. 

    Many scholarship opportunities are available for graduating seniors.  Please look ahead to application deadlines.  Scholarship information and links to applications are available on the Central High School website.  Go to “Student Life” and in the drop down, select “Scholarships”.  http://www.davenportschools.org/central/offices/guidance-office/scholarships/  All scholarships are listed by application due dates.  We encourage seniors to begin their scholarship applications now!

    Band Beats

    This coming Monday, the 22nd, is our next Devils Dining Out!

    We will be at Chipotle on Elmore from 4pm to 8pm where we can receive 50% of the proceeds.  All you have to say is “I’m with the band!” or show the attached document with your smartphone.  All money raised will go to support the students and programs of the instrumental music department.  Remember, you have to let the cashier know that you are there supporting the Central Bands.  Thanks and Go Blue

    Music Notes

    Davenport’s Central and West High Schools are co-hosting the 17th annual Great River Show Choir Invitational at the Adler Theater. The Middle School Show Choirs begin competition Friday, February 16th at 4:30pm. The High School Show Choirs will compete starting at 8:00am Saturday, February 17th, with finals beginning at 7:00pm. Don’t miss this opportunity to see some of the most talented teens singing and dancing their way into your heart!

    BLUE DEVILS Making a Difference in 2017-2018!!!

    As part of our commitment to work with you to reduce violence in our community Beyond The Baseline is offering the Marcus Jones Impact Award for this school year to three students. 

    We will award a total of 3 scholarships, one from each high school (Davenport West, North, and Central). 

    Here are the details. 

    Marcus Jones Youth Summit Impact Award

    Awarded to a student that has achieved the following:

    1.   Attended a Quad Cities Youth Summit – Stop The Violence – Keep Us Safe – 

                 during the 2017/18 School Year

    1.   Has made a positive impact at their school to reduce violence.
    2.   Has submitted a letter of recommendation from two faculty from their 

                 school explaining the positive impact the student has made. 

    1.   Has written and submitted a two page report answering the following:
    2. What the student feels our community can do to stop violence
    3. What the student has done to reduce violence in his/her school.

    Deadline for submitting letters of recommendation and report to be considered for award is April 15th, 2018.  Recipients will be announced in May, 2018

    DC You Know!!!

    Elliott Nominated for The Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders

    Junior Jessica Elliot will represent the state of Iowa in The Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders.  The conference, which will take place in June, will be held in Lowell, MA.  This incredible opportunity is in recognition of Jessica’s participation in honors courses as well as her passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).   She was nominated as a participant in the program by Nobel Prize winner, Dr. John C. Mather, who was recognized in the fields of Physics and Science. Dr. Mather based his nomination on Jessica’s academic achievements as well as her leadership skills and passion for her studies.

    During the 3-day conference, Jessica will join her peers and listen to Nobel Laureates of National Medal of Science recipients present new findings in cutting-edge scientific research as well as work with deans of several tech universities. The National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists was “founded on the  belief that science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education plays a critical role in enabling the United States to remain the economic and technological leader of the global marketplace of the 21st century and that we must identify prospective talent at the earliest possible age and help these students acquire the necessary experience and skills to take them to the doorstep of vital careers.” Congratulations to Jessica on this incredible honor, and best wishes to her as she represents Iowa at this prestigious conference.

    Southeast Iowa String Teachers Association Honor Orchestra

    Congratulations to Anna Johns, Holland Craig, Aron Mitchell and Cole Mitchell for the exceptional performance at the Southeast Iowa String Teachers Association Honor Orchestra over the weekend.  Senior, Anna Johns, and junior, Holland Craig placed on to the state level and will perform with an orchestra of Iowa’s top 100 orchestra students in a few weeks.

    JROTC Volunteers at New Year’s Reception

    Thank you to all of the JROTC cadets who worked so diligently at the Rock Island Arsenal’s annual New Year’s reception at historic Quarters One.
