COACH’S COMMENTS: Strong winds notwithstanding, many of you competed well and showed that your hard workouts of the past few weeks are paying off! Not every meet is an improvement over the previous meet, however, and dealing with disappointment or frustration is part of any sport. Sometimes the cause of that frustration is beyond your control (e.g., wind), while other times there’s a competitive lesson you need to learn from a meet. Overall, this was a satisfying performance from our team as a whole, especially those who hadn’t competed in a while. Our JV showed that our team for the next few years will be strong, which was one of the things we hoped to learn at this meet. Most of our Varsity were limited to one or two events because of the upcoming Jesse Day meet in two days; our team score was a partial reflection of that. There are always areas where we can improve, though, even after a successful meet. Two things in particular stand out: Our baton exchanges are costing us one to four seconds per relay, which is the difference between placing highly and not scoring at all. Our runners need to step up and be more competitive, which means paying the price in the middle of the race to stick right on an opponent’s shoulder. Let’s make those a priority for Thursday who will be competing, and for next week for everyone else!
