COACH’S COMMENTS

It would be disingenuous to pretend that we were surprised by how well you did at State this year! With four returning State medalists, it was almost a foregone conclusion that we would improve on the 19 points we scored last year. That we nearly doubled that total, brought home six medals, and just missed advancing to finals in the 4x400 demonstrates once again the tough competitors that all of you are! To produce 19 individual and relay season-bests at the most important meet of the year is partly due to excellent planning by your coaches J but is mostly due to your preparation and determination! No amount of coaching in the world can ever win a medal. It always comes down to an athlete facing the challenge of the moment of competition, and overcoming the distractions, doubts, and fears that arise when we push ourselves to the limit. It is a testament to your quality—as both athletes and as people—that you ended your season at the top!

Of course, we must recognize the exceptional achievements of four of the 15 athletes who competed in Des Moines. Three of our seniors ended their Blue Devil careers with State medals! Jerika repeated a medal in the same event as last year, Sahvanuh earned a medal in a new event from last year, and Jenna added two new events to the medals she earned the last two years! Jenna’s race in the 800 was probably the lone true surprise in the bunch; in the other four races, each of you was expecting to bring home some hardware. Expectations are sometimes hard to live up to, but none of you succumbed to the pressure of repeating your performances from last year. I hope your teammates are learning from your example!

The other special recognition goes, of course, to our defending State Champion! In typical fashion, one of Christina’s first reactions afterward was disappointment that she didn’t jump 19 feet—although she won by over a foot! It’s easy to forget that five months ago, we weren’t certain that you would be jumping this season at all, and that you didn’t jump for the first time until the middle of April. You sure made the most of your abbreviated jumping season! Again, I hope that your teammates are inspired by how hard you work, and how you accept nothing less that the best from yourself. It sure was fun watching you win the meet on your first legal jump!
