MEET RESULTS

STEVE SHERWOOD INVITATIONAL

Tuesday, March 29, 2005

VARSITY TEAM SCORES: 1st Iowa City 179, 2nd Mt. Pleasant 129, 3rd Burlington 71, 4th Urbandale 55, 5th Bettendorf 42, 6th Muscatine 39, 7th Cedar Rapids Xavier 37, 8th Davenport Central 32

JV TEAM SCORES: 1st Iowa City 260, 2nd Davenport Central 82, 3rd Muscatine 63, 4th Bettendorf 48, 5th Mt. Pleasant 47, 6th Burlington 21, 7th Urbandale 17, 8th Cedar Rapids Xavier 15

COACH'S COMMENTS: Although the Varsity scored doesn't show it, this was a good outdoor opener for us. The JV score is a more accurate reflection of where we are in our training––still working hard, just beginning to prepare for our competition phase. In every event in which we had a team or individual, we acquitted ourselves well against the defending State champs and two other schools that figure to place high at this year's State meet. The challenge in the coming weeks will be to find athletes on our team to fill the "gaps" in our entry card, especially in the 400––we had no entries in the 4x800, open 400, or 4x400. Be ready for the challenge!

COMMENTS: I know that there was a lot of puzzlement and frustration at not achieving greater distances in this event. In performance sports like track & field, different points in the season will yield greatly different outcomes because peak efforts are not part of the plan for every point of the season. Right now you're still improving your strength while at the same time trying to master small (but crucial) details of your event. Plus, you're also learning to be consistent on each and every throw, not just one great throw in the series. Be patient and persistent, because you all have the makings of superior throwers!

COMMENTS: Great start in this event! The veterans opened with a big PR or within 4' of their PRs, which is encouraging early in the season! Plus the rookies were up there too, which bodes well for later. Be prepared for a roller-coaster learning curve, just like in the shot, and continue to focus on what happens before the disc leaves your hand!

COMMENTS: As in every field event, consistency is key. You've got to take the same sized steps, at the same speed, and have your body in the same position at the board on each and every jump. Three of you did that very well, and Nina managed to pop one big one. Be pleased with the marks you achieved, but be prepared to continue to work on being a Xerox machine and "copy" your perfect jump!

COMMENTS: You shouldn't be surprised by an easy PR in this race, because you're capable of running much faster! Learning to be consistent––both in training and in concentration––and learning to push yourself more in the late stages of the race will be key as you move into the low 12's. Nice job!
