Davenport North 13 COACH'S COMMENTS It’s been 17 years since Varsity won a meet in
front of our home fans! We did it this year for a few reasons. First, each of
you has been working hard for the past ten weeks, and your hard
training is paying off! Although we didn’t have as many season-bests as at
other meets, you were consistently near those season-bests tonight.
That’s one of the marks of a team that’s ready for a big breakthrough—holding
steady at a good mark for a few meets in a row. Second, each of you competed
hard tonight! We talked all week about going after Prairie and
Bettendorf, and you did that at every opportunity. You didn’t always finish
ahead of them, but in 15 Varsity events and 13 JV events you beat someone!
Those points add up, and at the end of the night we had the best Varsity-JV
combined score! The third reason we were so far ahead on the Varsity side was
that Prairie were missing a few key athletes. It would have been a closer team
race if they had been at full strength, but I think we still would’ve finished
out in front! Our next full-team meet will be the MAC
Championships a week from Monday. We can expect much tougher competition from
Clinton and Pleasant Valley and Burlington than we got from the teams at this
meet. As we enter the “peak” phase of our season, some of you will find that
there are others on the team who are competing while you’re not. That’s an
unfortunate consequence of being on a good team—there isn’t always room for
everyone when the conference title is on the line. Nearly all of you has at
least one more shot at a season-best, though, whether it be at the Varsity
level or the following Monday at the MAC Frosh-Soph meet. Let’s make the most
of these last weeks of training, and be ready for Championship Week! JV Shot Put
