North 2 COACH’S COMMENTS To say that this was
a great meet (and season) for us would be an understatement. The last time we
placed this high at State, Coach Pettigrew and Coach Rangel were new fathers,
Coach Trujillo had never heard of Davenport, and Coach Bhave was wearing
diapers! We came into the meet hoping to score a few points more than last
year’s 7 points (17th place), and went into the final day of
competition in 8th place! Most impressive of all was that in our 12
events we had 9 season- or lifetime-bests! Those who didn’t get a SB or PR were
within a couple of ticks of their best. This shows (once again) how tough
each of you competed, and how you rose to the challenge of the biggest meet of
the year. We had no dropped batons, no false starts, and no one succumbed to
the pressure of the big stage. All of your teammates and coaches are proud of
everything you accomplished! A couple of you
deserve special recognition. First, TaShyia showed herself to be a tremendous
teammate in two ways. When Cassie couldn’t compete, TaShyia stepped up and ran
a solid leg on our 4x200. (If only the head coach had used his brain and switched
the order and had her run leadoff we would’ve run faster, but that’s the
coach’s fault not any of the athletes’.)
The next day when her hamstring was a little tender, TaShyia graciously
stepped aside rather than risk hurting the team by pulling up in the race, and
gave Shivonne a crack at a second race at State. The other special
recognition goes, of course, to our first State Champion in 21 years! Christina
popped the big one when it mattered most, and turned the tables on her fellow
competitor from Clinton. Most impressive of all, though, was that Christina was
as gracious in victory as she had been in defeat at Drake and MAC. Whether you
finish in first place or last, the experience of
competition is what you remember long after your days as an athlete
are finished. It was a thrill watching each of you go through that experience
at this meet and all season! 3000 winner Stephanie Mundt,
