MEET RESULTS

IOWA INDOOR INVITATIONAL

Saturday, March 12, 2005

HEAD COACH'S COMMENTS: This meet replaces what used to be the indoor State meet, and has become probably one of the top five competitive meets of the season. You all rose to the level of the competition, and should be pleased with your improvement since the first meet. This is still early in the season, though, with our "real" training still to come after the last indoor meet this week. Appreciate your good performances at this meet, but be ready to work harder in the coming weeks!

COMMENTS: After the unbridled success of our early season, several of you were a little surprised to not have another "breakthrough" meet. Just remember that in a technical event like the shot, small changes in technique can have a big impact on performance; yet those small technical changes can be difficult to master. You're still lifting hard and learning the event. Be patient, and you'll see continued improvement!

COMMENTS: A few more fouls than last week, but that's to be expected as you add speed to your approach. Christina has had more experience with the hang technique of the flight phase; as the rest of you get more practice at it, you'll be able to maximize your time in the air––which is the entire point, after all! Just focus on hitting the board every time, and jumping as high as possible! Nice job on the medal, Christina!

COMMENTS: You were able to rely on your excellent explosiveness off the apron while you're still learning the approach steps. This will take a while, so expect to have more meets like this where you have a miss at a lower height then an easy clearance at a higher one. Congratulations on your first high-school medal!

COMMENTS: You ran much more aggressively than last week, but you're capable of even better races. As you gain confidence and experience, you'll be more inclined to stick with the front of the first pack rather than the middle of the chase group. You made the right decision in not waiting with the crowd, and striking out on your own. Nice job!

COMMENTS: We were fortunate to have another team right in front of us to chase the entire way. That should be your focus in every race––to be right on someone's shoulder, and compete with everyone in front of you! You all showed big improvement over your first race, partly from two weeks of training and partly from being competitive. Our next focus will be to learn to run fast at the end of the race, even when you're tired. Well done!
